Me ? Yes. Not bad. A bit heavier than beef. Only as ground Dobbin, though. And in the 1960's when you could buy it at the butcher's.

Not that I'm aware of. Been meat-free (as far as I know) for about 15 years so it's probably even less likely during that time.

Yes, remember buying it at the butcher's when I was a kid (Europe, obviously). Recently had it both in Europe and in Japan (as "sashimi").

Yep, in Japan raw horse is called "basashi". Had it a couple of times and thought that it was quite good.

I'd dare to say the majority of humans don't know/don't remember (selectively or not)/cannot recall. And will never know for sure what is in their meat.

Didn't Congress cause the last horse slaughterhouse to be closed in the USA?

The first time I met my in-laws they served horse, I didn't know until afterwards bu it wouldn't have bothered me.

In my view, a horse is nothing but a cow with good PR.

Not Congress. They didn't pass anything about it.

Because Horses aren't raised in the US as food animals, and medication / etc... is not regulated accordingly.

Yep, many times. Before we could read the Japanese kanji , we were buying horse meat in supermarket thinking it was ground beef. Made great chili, spaghetti, etc.

And, like Drew said, bazashi, kind of a raw horse sushi, is actually quite good. If it looks good, eat it!*

They didn't directly cause the horse slaughterhouses to close. But about 5 years ago Congress prohibited the USDA from spending any of its budget on inspecting horses slaughtered for human consumption. Without the USDA inspection, the meat could not be transported across state lines, etc. So indirectly they caused it to happen.

Edit: Here is an entry on the USDA blog on the lifting of the ban - [blogs.usda.gov]

I remember small, white, cardboard, boxes--about the size of an Apple TV--of horse meat in my grandmother's freezer. She fed it to the cats, but I never ate it...that I know of...

One time long ago, I was presented with a hamburger I swear smelled just like the canned horsemeat that my mother fed the dogs. Can't remember if I ate it. So I voted 'No'.

Twice in Europe in the late nineties. First time in Belgium and the second time in Slovenia. Both in the form of a burger. Quite nice, but as a child of the fifties, I couldn't quite get the picture of Trigger out of my mind.
