Unfortunate. I just read through many of his FB postings - amusing as always, but also saddened by how 'fast' such diseases can decline a person's health and body - but rarely the mind.

I would encourage many of you to pick up your 'Folding' sticks and join/re-join/re-activate on Mac Folders @ Macresource.com Team #38910, currently #126 in the world - let's keep bringing it for Greg: [folding.extremeoverclocking.com]

I confided in him a bit about troubles i was having lately. nothing too big, but it felt really good to think that someone had read what i had written. his advice -

"just make sure you don't get a fatal disease"

it put a smile on my face.

*sigh*

Very sorry to hear this, I always looked forward to his posts and comments, even the obscure Excel ones. He will be missed.

It was a bit over two years ago that he gave us the first hint of what he was facing.

A perfect example of the essence of Greg appears in this thread:

Catzilla: Good luck Greg, it there is anything we can do?
Greg: Send more women.

Damn, I'm gonna miss him.

Not at all, but my information is a bit out of date. I haven't done petsitting in around a year, ever since becoming domesticated myself.

(For now, that's domesticated in an informal sense, not in a "recognized by the state" sense.)

I charged around $40-50 dollars per day, and I acknowledge that this may have been very low. The number was pretty much dependent on whether I was dealing with a guy in a small apartment, or a family in a great big house. Of course, this did not include fringe benefits, such as eating their pudding supply or exploring the wondrous combination of premium cable and Tivo.

And I'm so grateful I said that.

Better words than I could ever write that were sent to me when I suffered a grievous loss.

Death is nothing at all.
I have only slipped away into the next room.
I am I and you are you,
whatever we were to each other, that we still are.
Call me by my old familiar name,
Speak to me in the easy way which you always used.
Put no difference in your tone,
wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow,
laugh as we always laughed
at the little jokes we enjoyed together.
Pray smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word
that it always was.
Let it be spoken without effort,
without the trace of a shadow in it.
Life means all that it ever meant,
it is the same as it ever was.
There is unbroken continuity,
why should I be out of mind
because I am out of sight?
I am waiting for you
somewhere very near
just around the corner.
All is well.

God bless you, Greg, and your family and friends. You are sorely missed. RIP.

Bob Dylan:

When you’re sad and when you’re lonely
And you haven’t got a friend
Just remember that death is not the end
And all that you’ve held sacred
Falls down and does not mend
Just remember that death is not the end
Not the end, not the end
Just remember that death is not the end

When you’re standing at the crossroads
That you cannot comprehend
Just remember that death is not the end
And all your dreams have vanished
And you don’t know what’s up the bend
Just remember that death is not the end
Not the end, not the end
Just remember that death is not the end

When the storm clouds gather ’round you
And heavy rains descend
Just remember that death is not the end
And there’s no one there to comfort you
With a helpin’ hand to lend
Just remember that death is not the end
Not the end, not the end
Just remember that death is not the end

Oh, the tree of life is growing
Where the spirit never dies
And the bright light of salvation shines
In dark and empty skies

When the cities are on fire
With the burning flesh of men
Just remember that death is not the end
And you search in vain to find
Just one law-abiding citizen
Just remember that death is not the end
Not the end, not the end
Just remember that death is not the end

I've been hanging around various versions this forum and sponsor websites since, I think, May 1996, though that might not be temporally possible.

Greg was one of maybe three or four early enthusiastic participants who added wit, thoughtfulness, perspective, wisdom, and Mac savvy to every one of his posts and who made the forum worth coming back to.

I think we owe a lot of our existing culture to him. And that was even before the whole story of his situation with MacGurl, an epic unto itself.

Thank you, Greg.

My Greg story:

Several years ago he had a kitchen sink problem. As usual I gave the best and what I thought was easy advice to repair that situation. Several PM's exchanged. He didn't seem to get the concept. I gave him my number and he called me from Home Depot. Now it was getting late and the poor guy was still without a kitchen sink.

We setup an iChat, he on his Macbook and me on my desktop. He propped his Macbook on a chair and aimed it under the kitchen sink. The guy was all thumbs. After he showed me the Ptrap and parts I talked him through it. No leaks.

It was kinda cool.

The next day he somehow added money to my iTunes account. I don't know how he did it. He guessed that my iChat and iTunes used the same address. He was right.

That was very cool.

A real genuine good soul. You'll be missed brotha.
