Why are Apple TV 2 in demand for exchange on ebay?

Was looking to pick up a used Apple TV 3 when the search was flooded with "Send your Old Apple Tv 2 and receive a NEW APPLE TV 3 and $25 iTunes Gift Card"

You get an Apple TV 3 and a $25 gift card? What is the catch here? Why is the ATV2 so much in demand?

Since I'm not a jailbreaker, I wonder if I should sell my ATV2 while it's still in demand.

What incredible things am I missing out on by not jailbreaking?

I have worked with clients to sell their Apple TV 2s on Amazon (I buy them an Apple TV 3 and replace their unit) and whatever the difference it, they get credit for future work. I have sold them for $180-$220 so if you have a version 2 and do not care about hacking them, this is a good route.

I learned this yesterday. If it were me, I'd jailbreak to enable Perian and a bunch more codecs/formats.

I have one jailbroken to run XBMC. Lots of stuff you can do with that, most of which I don't ever have time to play with, though.

No perian for the iOS appletv, you're thinking of an ATV1. XBMC needs no external codecs anyway.

I did this months ago - sold both my ATV2's for $175 each, then bought two refurb ATV3's.

Don't care about jailbreaking so it was a no-brainer.

Good points on using Plex. I like the idea of replacing it with a Roku 3, which has the new earphone jack on the remote, since my ATV 2 is in our bedroom. How do you like the Roku 3?

What's the Plex interface like on the Roku? Have they streamlined it, or is it about the same as the standalone Plex app?

This probably isn't detailed enough regarding the benefits to actually answer your question(s), but it's a start: [osxdaily.com]

Thanks for the link. I think I will stick with an atv3 and a roku. I am good at screwing anything up that goes past a GUI.

I have three ATV2's, all jailbroken. Use software from FireCore called ATVFlash (Black) and it opens up a world of possibilities for $30 (LINK). Once I did that I was able to connect my Drobo NAS to each player and have a media system that connects straight to a folder instead of iTunes. The Media Player is an app that is self-contained and requires no other codecs to play all sorts of video formats. You can load metadata (movie/tv info, actor info, plot summary...), subtitles/languages, index your library (for searching) and if you want to, sync your watched/unwatched progress among all of your jailbroken tv's. There are lots of other options, including the XMBC route explained above. I tried that with one of mine and also found that there's way too much customization than I have time or desire to get into.

Bottom line: Content from a fileserver (AFP or SMB) without jumping through hoops.
