Best app to help recovery from stolen laptop?

Hi,

I'm looking at Undercover 5 from Orbicule, as a protection
against theft.

They do a feature comparison that obviously shows them
with major advantages over their competitors, but I wonder
if anybody has other suggestions, or comments about
Orbicule and Undercover, etc.

Thanks.

My company pushes Computrace Complete and LoJack from Absolute.

...Which is not to say that they're the best. I do like the Computrace portal, tho.

I know they have a service guarantee, that if they can't track the computer and get it back, they say they'll pay a certain amount (declining the longer you have the computer and maintain your agreement with them), up to $1,000.

However, it is mired in such layers of legalese, that I can imagine how easy it would be to slip out of that...because the average user will not want to engage the costs of a lawyer to deal with it.

It appears that their technology is a roughly equal to Orbicule, without a couple of features.

Who's to say which is best?

The guarantee might level the field, giving some assurance that you'll at least get something back in the worse case scenario.

But that is somewhat countered by the fact that Lojack costs 5X as much as Undercover over the same period.

The only way you seem to "win" is if your laptop is stolen very early on. LOL.

Anyway, thanks for the input.

Orbicule worked for me...got my daughter's macbook back. A lot depends on whether the police cooperate and will work on your case.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Paid solutions, like CompuTrace, will work directly with the Police to assist on the recovery. You must file the police report, first, and then pass that along to the company, they will then do all the work for you and actually 'stay on top' of the police to do their part.

These companies usually already have a contact with the PD's in many areas, so the processed is already greased a little, most of the time, to get things moving.
