one big honking SHADOW, but no tower that I could see.

The top of it is cut off, actually. You can see the circular base, and the left tower strut, but not TOP.

It's not a mic cord conspiracy.

And I love the leaning tower of eiffel

It's an interesting anomaly that the shadow exists in the google map image, but the structure does not.

Hard to take a picture of the tower, that is where the picture is being taken from, at that resolution at least.
Remember, Google Maps are woven together from several different sources.

The pictures are taken from various satellites, from various angles, sometimes months/years apart, They are then stitched together like a quilt using GPS metadata. The anomalies like tilting towers and missing features are very common. Distortion and parallax correction does odd thing to make the pieces fit.

Sunny one on block, clouds on the next.

Crazy, isn't it.
