iPhone 5S cable and charger
Posted by: chopper

My son asked me to pick him up an iPhone S car charger and also a spare USB cable and wall charger online. Is this still the territory of monoprice.com or who is the cheap but good supplier?

IOS7 has made many third party cords worthless. I'd recommend you "bite the bullet" and pay to get genuine Apple cords. As to the USB port the cord will plug into; as long as you stay with a brand name, I expect you'll be OK. A USB port is supposed to output 5VDC at a minimum of 500 mAH (.5 amps, more would be OK).

Amazon has their own house brand that works fine with OS 7, and their customer service is great.

The Amazon cable works fine, but will NOT plug in if he has the Apple leather case. Such a pain to take off and put back on the case. I'd go Apple, overpriced as it is.

Car chargers are nothing more than a cig lighter to USB port.

I actually found a nice stubby one at the dollar store, works fine, its got 1 amp.

Which dollar store?
Can you hurt a device if the amperage of the AC to USB doohickey is too high?

Generally, no.

A device will only draw the current needed, regardless of the potential. Of course, if the device develops a short, then it will draw more current than normal. That could be a little dramatic.

Same here.

And I've noticed that a lot of vendors that had chargers with dual USB ports, one 1A and one 2.1A, have replaced them with two 2.1A ports.

Monoprice cables have a life-time warranty.

I have used a LOT of different USB wall chargers / car chargers with my iOS devices. The main limitation is with the big iPad - takes more than most USB adapters put out. I have two from Amazon, work great.

Don't think you need a special one for the iP5S, tho.

I got a nice cable from Dealextreme. Only problem is, it seems to discharge my iPhone 5. Still trying to figure that one out. A different cable that i got from Dealextreme works well. Neither gives me the unsupported message.

I have tried the Apple generics from ebay and amazon. The early generic versions were very easy to spot, it was a different 8 pin connector. All three fell apart/failed within a month. Looking at getting an Amazon Basics cable as they are highly rated along with replacements of monoprice 6ft cables. Monoprice's cables lasted longer. One just died and the other is on its way out (Wife getting an iPhone 5s next month, getting ready). I just purchased a "100% Authentic Apple iPhone 5 lightning cable" from an ebay seller in the US who had great feedback and sold thousands. It turned out to be a very good clone. Same type/texture of cable and plugs. Pictures will be posted soon.
Asking for a refund, paid $11.

How did I know it was fake/counterfeit.
1. Not the same length as my original Apple lightning USB cable.
2. Alignment of 8pin plug was off a bit.
3. The plastic glued to the metal USB port unglued after two uses.

I have not had good luck with non apple lightning cables with the exception of Griffin or Amazon house brand.

Can someone post a link to the Amazon house cable? When I search Amazon, thousands of cable pop up, and everyone I've ordered wasn't supported by Mrs. Poochie's iPhone.

Chopper,

In the event you go for one that claims to be Apple OEM, you should compare it to those on this web page:

That is a decent listing by Apple, but the counterfeits have gotten better.
The few details that the counterfeiters havent been able to copy is the text size, cable length, glue and finished build quality.
