So how do people "normalize" their iPod?

Noticed that some songs, are quiet, and some are loud.

How do you handle normalization on the iPod?

First post.... and still no car problems, yet.

I would like it, if it raised the sound of the quietest ones, to the sound of the loudest. Does it do that, in itunes? Still don't think from what I read that it transfers this over to the iPod.

you are talking about some sophisticated active compression, based on what I hear (now).

Interesting Q.

In iTunes there is something called Sound Check under Preferences>Playback

It is supposed to adjust all songs to the SAME LEVEL. It works crappy.

I found it better to choose the songs that are too loud or soft, click them once, do a Get Info and under "Options" you can manually adjust the volume of each song accordingly.

I do think that carries over to the iPod.

No, I think it scans your music library periodically and adjusts the volume of the song accordingly (like the manual method above) based on an average.

Almost like turning up the gain/output on a tape deck and a receiver.

well, it's quite simple. First, define the iPod unit. take your favorite Ipod, let's say iPod Mini (now discontinued) and measure it. Now if you have a larger iPod, take a file and and work around the edges of the larger iPod until it has the same size as the Mini. It now has the same size as the "unit" iPod, therefor it is "normalized".

Alternatively, if you have a smaller iPod, i.e. a Nano or a Shuffle, use chewing gum or a similar material and glue it around the iPod until it had the proper dimensions.

Sorry, I couldn't resist smiling smiley
