Need some advice on Time Machine and migration advice

Hi,

Need some Time Machine and migration advice.

Just lost a drive. The backup is about week old and
I'm relatively okay there.

There are some files that were downloaded this
week and DevonThink (database app) was updated,
plus a couple of work files modified.

I thinking about getting a new drive and restoring from
Time Machine, then slap the old drive into an enclosure
and migrate the newer stuff manually.

Diskwarrior will probably bring back the drive, but I
need to get the newest version in.

Then do a new TM backup.

1. Can the migration take place on specific files only,
or just categories of files (documents, images, etc.)?

2. Is it a better idea to try to migrate everything before
thinking of the TM restore?

Thanks.

I'm not clear on how you can migrate anything from a lost drive. If you think DiskWarrior can revive the bad drive, try it first. If it works, back it up and you're done.

-- you can restore from a Time Machine any way you want, at the file or folder level. Once you get in there you'll notice it just looks like a Finder window.

If you're just replacing a few files, that works fine.

But if you're using the Migration Assistant (after w fresh install of the OS) to restore your computer to (roughly) its last working state then you have choices among categories - User accounts/Applications/Network and computer settings/files outside of the Home folder(s).

There are few choices below those categories. Basically, you get to choose which home folders get migrated.

Thanks deckeda and Chakravartin, that helps.

In regards to a "lost" drive, this happened
once before. It wasn't really lost, just not
accessible because of the OS.

Once I put the drive into an external enclosure
I was able to pull files off. I'm hoping that's the
case here.
