For those who still file paper: Do your tabs go in the front or back?
Posted by: Dennis S

I need to pick one and stick with it. I can make a case for either way, but if there's a consensus and some good reasons for one or the other, I'll go that way.

Also, do you keep your tabs in a line or space them out?

Of course you can do it either way, but label on the back is the industry standard.

Notice how folders are shown on any folder manufactures' or sellers' web site; tabs alway in the rear.

Back it is, then. That's how I started, but somewhere along the line, I started using them in the front. I was clearing out some files last night and noticed I had them both ways.

Back. Staggered.

Me too. But I use the 'staggering' for sub-topics. Primary topic on left, first sub-topic to the right, and others right of that.

S-T, against the wall is aesthetically pleasing. Over the top is not. old fogey smiley

(I actually remember that Ann Landers discussion, which went on for some time, from back in the '70s, I think, when we subscribed to The Providence Journal, which carried her column. Odd what we remember. . . )

Good idea. I never thought of that.

Back, because it's easier to drop stuff into the folder with one hand by pressing the pages against the tab and sliding down into the gap that creates.

Good explanation why you prefer that method, but I guess you can also do the opposite, if you put the tab in the font, slide the pages behind the tab and pull gentl to make a gap and slide the pages in.

It's a more difficult angle to hit properly when you do it that way.

From the front, it's just a matter of dropping your wrist at a natural angle. It barely requires any force (unless your file-box is overstuffed).

From the rear, you have to first over-reach, then flex your wrist down and push. It's an odd enough angle that it can easily get painful after the first few repetitions.

OK, you really know your stuff! LOL.

I also used tabs in the back, to me they just look better. I never thought about putting tabs on the front. I have never seen anyone put tabs in the front.

I had a secretary once who started putting the tabs on the front. Fortunately, she didn't last long, as I had to go through and put them where they belonged.

I always file most recent first, in front. That's a whole 'nother discussion, of course.

Front. Then I can see it, grab it, pull it forward and up, and slide it in.

I put my tabs on the front of the folders with the contents inside oldest (front) to newest (back). So I guess I'm wrong on both counts.

LOL! There isn't any right or wrong. It's entirely a matter of personal preference, or—if you're employed—your boss's personal preference.

This is true.

But I've always found Front, Staggered to be more convenient for me. In cases where files where fairly big, tabs all lined up on the right worked well.
