Study shows that the best way to identify a narcissist is simply to ask

In the study, published in PLOS One, researchers report being able to assess narcissism with one simple question: “To what extent do you agree with this statement: ‘I am a narcissist.’” Based on the participant response (on a scale of one to seven), researchers were able to accurately diagnose narcissism.

Interestingly, the question is followed by the following note:

“Note: The word “narcissist” means egotistical, self-focused, and vain.”.

Yet individuals were still found to report their narcissism.

“People who are narcissists are almost proud of the fact. You can ask them directly because they don’t see narcissism as a negative quality – they believe they are superior to other people and are fine with saying that publicly,” said Brad Bushman, co-author of the study and a professor of communication and psychology at The Ohio State University.

I grudgingly had to say yes. In the past, I would've definitely have said yes, without blinking.

I've learned and developed myself to be less narcissistic....

I used to be conceited but now I'm perfect.

Scored a 29. I guess these are supposed to be one of those tests where a high score is supposedly a bad thing...

Would a truly narcissistic person be able to do that? Do you think you weren't full-blown? I assume it's on a spectrum.

I think in the old days, I was much worse. But something stuck with me, of course from ST:TNG, "the challenge to life is getting improving oneself."
