25 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall

Yes... already 25 years. A nice video piece from Time : [time.com]

I remember Nov 89... news outlets were putting together their 'Top Stories of the Decade' pieces not realizing that the top story of the decade was happening RIGHT NOW.

What a great time that was for Germany... the wall was built the summer I was born, so it was around my whole life. I never thought it would come down... and if it did, I was expecting a bang, not a whimper. It just dissolved one day.

I'll post this on the other side too. I consider this a great story for humanity, but it is also political... too bad.

I remember when I was a kid getting a kick out of the fact that they were selling pieces of it in infomercials....

I spent the Summer of 1983 there. I was working on the Berlin Radar Project at Tempelhof AB.

A few pics...

I'm in Berlin now ready to celebrate the 25th anniversary. I was here 25 years ago on November 10th, drove all night from Paris. I'll post some photos of before and after if I can find the locations.

I was in Berlin in late May of 1990, staying with some wonderful people near Alexanderplatz. Germans could pass back and forth freely, but there were still some restrictions on others. Every night, we went to the checkpoint, where I would go over to West Berlin briefly and come back to the east again, to comply with some requirement about length of stay. All along the wall, people were selling their medals, uniforms, etc.

There was a fair amount of arrogance in the way the West Germans dealt with their East German brethren after the euphoria died down.

A great and exciting but unexpected event during Pres. G.H.W. Bush's term. And the two principals (the other, Mikhail Gorbachev) are still alive and kicking.

It was a remarkable, and exhilarating time. I believe George Will (although my memory may be failing me on the authorship here) observed that for weeks on end, newspaper headlines that would have been unthinkable just months earlier appeared on a daily basis.

May we see their like again, and soon.

Lest we forget, November 9 was also the 76th anniversary of Kristallnacht.
