Appstore and iMovie never finished updating, now can't be opened

So, the Appstore starts the updating of iMovie to the latest version (pre-Yosemite), and inexplicably stops. Now the app won't open.

Message: iMovie is being updated and cannot be opened while it is being updated.

Now, the only version I see in the app store is workable after upgrading to Yosemite, which I'm not ready to do yet. So, I can't just delete it and download a new one.

Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks.

Options:

1. Copy the app back from your Time Machine backup.

2. Copy the app back from your nightly clone.

3. Toss the damaged app in the trash and try to download it again from the Purchases section of the App Store. It may download the correct version for your OS with a simple click, or it may prompt you with a message that the latest version won't run on your Mac and provide you with the option of downloading the older version.

My iTunes update did the same thing. It needed a strong sustained wifi signal to complete the 2gb download. Eventually it finished the download.
