Do most of the cameras have to be pluggged in?

Yes. A power source is needed.

I wish there was a decent "home" version with wireless cameras available. The thought of running cables all through my attic and hooking them up somewhere turns me off. Plus, what happens if you decide after the fact that a camera be better placed elsewhere? You have to rewire it. I'd like an 8 channel DVR, with 8 wireless cameras that can do a minimum of 720p recording. I'd be willing to spend a couple of grand for that.

There are plenty of "basic home security" cameras available in the $50-$80 range that are wireless.
You have to connect to ethernet for initial setup then you can put them anywhere in your wifi's range. They do need to be plugged in to wall power.

Some of the cheap wired and wireless cameras aren't much more capable that this:

A lot of resolution specs are contrived.

RZ,

What you want exists. Here are a couple of examples:

My parents want a wireless surveillance system with a DVR but they need an 8 camera system with room for growth and want compatibility with Mac and iOS. That means, a system with more than 8 channels is necessary. No doubt they exist. Compatibility with the Mac and iOS, that's more difficult. Most systems allow for viewing via the iOS and some allow for viewing on the Mac but that's about it. Configuration requires a Windows box or going to the system itself directly.

Imagine the market you would have if you sold a WiFi 720p system fully configurable on a Mac or iOS device.

And anyone who sells a system which isn't high definition should be liable when the thief's face is indistinguishable from a hamster's.

Good observation Speedy. You've strengthened my resolve to snag a pair of these next time they pop up in the $55 range:

129 sold. Okay, so not a huge market but worth the effort.

Huh? 129 sold for this listing only... probably a bunch like me waiting for a better price.
