OT: Need a Good Lip Balm
Posted by: Stavs
Date: December 03, 2014 08:54AM
I have major issues with dry chapped lips in the colder months. I've been using Chapstick, but hate the greasy sticky feel on my lips. Is there something else someone can recommend that I can get at Walgreens that is better?

Totally shameless plug here but my cousin in AZ makes and sells her own...

I tried some last week when we visited and it worked great. I was initially surprised at how chapped my lips got when we arrived since I'm like you and used to chapped lips in the colder months. But since AZ has such low humidity my lips dried out really fast.

I like Burts Bees, not as thick and gummy feeling as Chapstick.

I've tried many different brands, but always go back to original chapstick for treating lips.

Thats what I'm using now, and it works, but it's just so gross feeling for lack of a better word. I guess I should be thankful its healed the issue as yesterday was brutal for me.

I have always figured that the greasy feeling is part of the process, since I assume it's keeping the lips moist by preventing the air from drying them out any worse than they are.

your own body oils
it's what your epidermis protects itself with - your lips just don't have the capacity to manufacture these essential oils.

Try 'em all. Your Lips May Vary (YLMV). Dad used to smear our faces with lanolin from a tube in the winter. Yes... sheep hair grease.

A friend of mine uses cow manure. Doesn't cure much but you sure won't lick your lips.

Seriously, I had good luck with Carmex.

Another Carmex fan here.
Chapstick is just wax to keep your lips from drying out. Carmex is a softer, non waxy, gunk that actually HELPS if your lips DID get dried out.

Leave 'em be. That's all you need to do; leave 'em be. They'll acclimate. And drink lots of water because all of you is dry in the winter.

I have a problem with dry, chapped lips because I tend to be a mouth breather and lick my lips a lot. It is worse in the winter. I try to use products that condition my lip skin and not dry them out more. Chapstick is good for protection but not conditioning. I used to use Carmex all the time but it is made to dry out cold sores. I think I got a boomerang effect with it. Aveeno makes some good lip conditioners and Vasoline Lip Therapy is good too.

for everyday type of chapped lips Carmex.

for heavy duty, really painful, cracked sore lips this stuff is the bomb:

Lansinoh HPA Lanolin

yes, it's nipple cream for breastfeeding moms, 100% lanolin, and is the absolute best thing ever. STF for someone i recommended it to a few years ago. after putting aside his manly manliness he ordered some and thanked me gratefully later for the tip.

Me too. No other flavor of Chapstick, no other brand of balm. Everything else is too runny/greasy/unabsorbent.

The only downside is it can be a bit tricky to find at retail. If you have an American Apparel nearby and can stomach to go in, they carry it.

Have you tried <your favorite> hand cream/skin cream. I use Vaseline Cocobutter skin cream. Works great!
My other favorite is ]Mentholatum!? Not as harsh as Vick's Menthol ointment.

This is the best.

Another vote for this product. Back in my UPS days I would use the hand cream version of this during the cold winter months. UPS hubs are mostly open to the environment and, in the winter, can get pretty cold during the graveyard hours I used to work; it was brutal on the hands (I didn't wear gloves). One application of the Norwegian Formula hand cream before starting a shift kept my hands baby soft the entire night. Good stuff.

It is what it is.
