TIP for iPhone 6/+ owners - get an iPad charger

I've mentioned this before, but I'm in an airport and it's FAR better to have an iPad charger than a standard phone charger. Instead of trickle-charging (I keep the phone on), plugging in my iPad charger visibly increases the battery on this iPhone 6+ while I'm uisng the phone - downloading some podcasts from a sister thread here, checking email, etc.

Just posting again since there seem to be more new iPhone owners here.

many device chargers barely charge if the device is being used heavily at the same time.

Nope - the iPhone 6 series has a new feature that allows them to slurp more juice.

Exactly. But some of the new tech that's in iPhones and high-end Android phones allow faster charging if you are using a more powerful charger.

Good advice, and it holds true for car chargers as well.

Plenty. Just look for something that supplies at least 2.1A per port. That applies to all iPads, and now the iPhone 6 as well, in general. That will allow them to charge at full speed.

But beware there is some deceptive marketing out there where an aggregate figure is given, like two 1.0A ports being marketed as a "2.0A" charger. The important thing is to look at the output for each port.

USB charging is 5V, so that figure won't change, and not something that has to be worried about.

I have a car charger with 2 USB ports. If I use one, it is 2.1 amps. If I use two, its an amp each.

No.

You can almost always use a charger rated at a higher current (2.1A vs 1A) as a device draws what it "needs" as opposed to a charger cramming Amps down it's port. A higher voltage is a different matter. While a device can work with a charger that has excess current capacity, excess voltage can toast it.

the iPhone 6 series has a new feature that allows them to slurp more juice.

I'm not clear on which ones, but some iDevices benefit from a higher capacity chargers (before the 6-series came out) and some don't. That's good information about the 6 and 6+.

The important thing is to look at the output for each port.

This.

My first hi-cap charger had on 2.1A USB port and would charge any iDevice, including the less demanding iPhone. My second charger had one 2.1A and one 1A port. Now I use one that has two 2.1A ports.
