Lame to give hand-me-down iPad 3 and MacBook Air C2D as Christmas gifts?

They both still work fine. I just needed added firepower.

I could sell them and take the money and buy different presents but I bet I couldn't get as much money as their usefulness would bring.

iPad includes Verizon personal hotspot and my brother was talking about buying a hotspot anyway. It's probably not fast enough for the latest games my nephew would want to play.

For someone who has limited files and just wants to surf the web and run Word, the Air seems pretty nice. One scratch on top.

But part of me hates looking cheap.

Man, I think the gifts are great, assuming they look better than average and work fine. Seems pretty swell to me. What capacity iPad 3? What model and specs MacBook Air?

Both nice.

64 GB iPad 3 Verizon and 4/256 MacBook Air mid 2010. I'm still amazed at how fast the old MacBook Air boots.

I traded up for an iPad Air 2 and a refurb 2013 MacBook Air i7 8/512.

First, nice upgrades. Secondly, those are nice outgoing devices. A bit of history, I paid $500 for an open box 64GB iPad 3 (WiFi only) 2-4 weeks before the iPad 4 surprise announcement in late 2012. Which was a good deal then. Your model is a Verizon LTE model to boot. Amazon will give you up to $244 ($219.60 for Good condition) in trade in, well that's for black, white is worth a little less, but still over $200. 13" Air?Amazon is willing to give up to $400+.

Seems like nicely valuable gifts and far from cheap. If you were my family, you would be getting gifts made by my daughter for the holidays. That's cheap. smiling smiley

Get brand new cases for each, set up software either to brand new or tailored to each recipient.

If you happen to have the original boxes, wrap them up in those.

These are excellent tech still today.

I've given similar gifts and they have been very welcomed - if targeted right - to Apple users whose tech is older than the gifts you want to give.

It's the thought that counts.
If it doesn't, then maybe the recipient didn't deserve it.

Wraip then nice with a card the says something like "These have served me well. May they do the same for you".

Or "I hope you enjoy these as much as I have".

Cleaned up and maybe paired with an iTunes gift card, and a card that thoughtfully lets the recipient know that you're not trying to pass off something as new.

I like the idea of a new case to go with them, though that can be a very personal choice. Putting them in the original box is a judgement call. You would want it understood before seeing the box that it's not brand new.

I'd do it, and I'd be happy to get something similar.

Nah, those suck. I'll send you a box so you can send them to me. I'll even ay the postage!

Seriously, anybody who doesn't appreciate receiving one of those (assuming they don't have anything as good or better) is making a mistake.

it really depends on the relationship you have with the person. I think only you can make that judgement call.

This. A few years back I purchased an original iPad for my mom to enable her to be able to continue reading (her eyesight had deteriorated to the point that she could not read printed media anymore). Last year for Christmas I gave her my iPad 4, as I was upgrading to an iPad Air. She absolutely loved it.

I think it's a great gift idea for family members. I'd be quite happy to get either one of those.

Kinda lame. Would you give someone your old used TV while buying yourself a newer bigger TV?

I don't think that's a good comparison, unless the recipient doesn't have any television.

That was true when my wife and I first got married. We would have appreciated an excellent working television from a family member that was upgrading theirs.

Even so, the kind of technology here is not exactly 'old'.

There are some human considerations. I have one child who would be delighted with older tech - like my older iPhone3GS. But another child was not happy inheriting my wife's iPhone 4. One child greatly values the 'never been used, just for them' experience - and would prefer something lower quality if it's new than something perfectly fine but used.

This latter effect is why I suggested getting a brand new case and/or making these look refurbished in software, etc. I admit that even I get a positive feeling when I hold an iPhone with a spanking new case. And there are nice Mac laptop cases; these cost <$20. There are even custom-made iPhone cases from sites on the web, or you can make one custom - I used an OWC yellow/black 'buzz' case and some excellent bee stickers to make a case for my sister who's a beekeeper for her first iPhone, a repurposed high-end family phone.

Another nice add-on is a second charger/sync cable for any iOS device. Those can age much faster than the device itself, especially the cable. And you can get those in colors that would be personalized.

I'd ask them if they'd like to have them as their Christmas gifts. I think some things shouldn't be surprises and the kind of computer/tablet somebody uses is pretty personal.

Generally, those would make great gifts if you know the recipients well enough to know these would fit their needs. For example, if my former father-in-law gifted me his tower when he got a new one, I would have been very apriciative.

I'd love a MB air, even a base one. I know if someone gave my partner one, even used, she would be exstatic. Heck, for that matter, just over a year ago, she got a 12" MacBook G4, and she was gleeful for about 6 months. Perfect for her to tote around and work on her masters' papers when she had down time. Thanks again Mrs M A V I C!
