How much is a Mac Pro (Early 2008) w/2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core worth?

Hi,

About how much is my Mac Pro (Early 2008) worth, if I want to sell it quickly? It has:
2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core
4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB

I have a chance to get a good deal (about $700) on a Mac Pro (Early 2009) with:
2 x 2.80GHZ. Quad-Core Intel Xeon,
8 GB 1066Mhz DDR3 RAM,
250 GB SATA HD, Mac OSX 10.6.8 installed
ATI Radeon HD26000 256MB

Edit Addition (bummer!) :
It it might have a single Quad-Core

But my wife will be really upset if I lose a substantial amount of money on the transaction.

It looks like my Radeon with 4x the memory is a better card? If so can I swap the cards?

Can I just put the boot drive from my 2008 into the 2009?

Are there any substantial improvements in the 2009 vs the 2008?

Best Wishes,

Mitch

Mitch, I don't think $700 is such a great deal on that 2009 Mac Pro (the very same machine I'm using). My friend just bought that exact machine with a 30-day warranty and 14 GB ram for $550 from a local Mac shop. They're an authorized Apple reseller that also deals in used stuff, and I consider them fair but not especially cheap.

FYI - You can add another 2.8 processor to that machine, but it might not be worth it to you.

You'll need the processor, the heat sink tower, and thermal paste.

I had an '08 Mac Pro motherboard fail (don't really know what went bad, but it wouldn't boot) so I pulled both processors out of it. One went into a single processor '08 Mac Pro, the other went into an '08 Xserve.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I just found out that is not an early 2009. It is an early 2008 with:
2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core
8 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM

And I should have mentioned that it comes with a 20" Apple Cinema Display.

I would like to upgrade my old 18" Samsung LCD. If I can buy the 2008 with twice the RAM and a 20" Cinema, and easily sell it for about the same price without the Cinema Display it's a no-brainer.

Best Wishes,

Mitch

Hate to say it, but it's probably only worth around $500. I hate to say it because I have a dual quad core Early 08 Mac Pro. Mine is a bit more bumped up than yours (24 GB RAM, 2GB Video card, USB 3 card, eSATA card, SSD drive, etc) but I think I'm being realistic when I say my computer probably isn't worth more than about $750.

Hi,

I think I can negotiate a better price on the 2008 with the 20" Cinema.

For a fairly quick sale?

Thanks!

I bought one (Mac Pro 3,1) a few months back for $320 off a local college. It was an eBay sale. They had about 10 of them, and some went for less than $300 with the same specs.

1 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core
8 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
512 MB video card

I picked one of those up for $350 about a year ago, without a 5770. So maybe $450 to $500 with the 5770.

Stick with what you have; it's not really an upgrade.

If you need a better monitor then get a monitor.

IMO You would probably get more money parting the machine out on fleabay...

The 5770 card is going to be something you want to keep as many programs are designed to use gpu more.

This. 20" apple display at 1600 x 1080 is pfft. $25.

I decent 24" at 1920 x 1080 isn't more than $125.

What are you using it for? Are you looking for an upgrade sppeed wise? Is there some reason for a giant tower? Do you need all the internal storage? Or?
