Aviation Mavens

Just some idle curiosity here. I moved to a room with a view at work in January, and had got used to watching airplanes fly by at a rate of about one every 45 seconds. Was starting to be able to ID them by their colors.... seemingly coincidental with the time change there are barely any to be seen at all--- it's like they just eliminated 1/3 of the fly area.... anyone know why this might happen?

Those planes may be flying to, or coming from, areas of bad weather where they're grounded... Just a guess.

(By the way, that mapservices.org link in your sig is dead... Looks like they folded up their tent?)

The prevailing winds changed direction, and they are taking off/landing on opposite sides of whatever runway(s) they are using at the airport.

The time change confused those pilots. They're still belly up to the bar instead of on their planes.

Most of the planes I would see would fly by the window west-east, do a hard left, and head west and slightly north presumably on their final approach into O'Hare.
I would see what looked like at least 3 flight paths befiore.... very unsettling that I can't see a single plane in a huge chunk of sky. I feel like I'm in a sci-fi episode where they miscalculated a jump in time and went back a few hundred years too early.

Thanks. Apart from showing the area in question as mostly empty, I can't seem to correlate that with anything I can see out the window. Is there a time delay? What do orange vs yellow planes mean?

What is the difference between the yellow and the orange planes?

ADS-B and MLAT data that is processed in real time is shown with yellow aircraft symbols. FAA data that is processed with a 5 minute delay is shown with orange aircraft symbols.

Yay, I finally saw a yellow one out the window. But this doesn't start to explain the drastic change-- it was the same heavly volume all the time for weeks. Now barely anything. The other thing that's changed is that there are now birds filling the sky and before there were barely any...

I'm right under the flight path out of Logan for two runways (and only a few miles away from the airport so they are still low over my house), and the same thing happens here: sometimes it's less than a minute apart, other days, nothing. One runway (the most active) is used by flights headed to Europe, so traffic really picks up in the evening starting at 4pm, especially on Sundays.

Most likely explanation: prevailing winds have changed direction.
Less likely, but possible: redefinition of airspace and of arrival/departure patterns. I think the most recent chart update was March 5.

Yay! My flight path is back today! Lightly used, maybe once every 10 or 15 minutes, but when they do pass they're closer, lower and slower than before.

Airplanes have a natural aversion to landing with tailwinds.

Wind direction changes in the springtime I presume?

We used to have heavy jet traffic right over our condo. Military jets flying in to the El Toro Marine base.

When they closed the base down an effort was made to open a commercial airport in its place.

The public fought successfully to defeat that plan.

I was so happy not to have noisy jets flying over, every few minutes.

Low and loud does not make for a peaceful life.

Black, you make it sound as if you enjoy the aviation traffic???

Loving it. Can't hear a thing.... they float by silently, appearing impossibly close and slow..... I'm only on the 6th floor so not sure why they seem so much closer than on the ground.

are they on their landing approach? generally, they are quite loud on take off.

ah, I see where you later wrote that the planes were on their landing approach, so I guess the silent birds are kinda cool.
