The Plane! The Plane ! Aero Commander

Since we all seem to like planes pretty well, here's some that I shot.

1959 Aero Commander 500. This is a pretty slick ride. I think the original design went back to right after WWII, by Dutch Kindelberger who designed the P-51 Mustang. I think - I need to look it up.

Wouldn't be surprised, as this plane was designed by North American (designers of the Mustang).

This design had seen all sorts of tweets and mods, ultimately culminating in a swept wing high speed business jet. First the piston engines were replaced by turboprops and the fuselage lengthened.

Then the turboprops were dispelled with all together and replaced by jet engines mounted on the rear fuselage, near the tail (the horizontal stabilizers were moved up further on the vertical stab and swept), and at the same time the high wings were relocated to the middle of the body, and tip tanks were added, along with another fuselage lengthening. This design was called the Westwind.

Then the straight mid mounted wing was replaced by an advanced third generation double cranked swept supercritical wing mounted at the bottom of the fuselage, giving the airplane a very modern look. It was now called the Astra.

At this point the design forked into two subtypes, one retaining the original layout, and another that replaced the fuselage with an all new wide body design, called the Galaxy.

Both subtypes were further modified into a myriad of variants, and rebranded by Gulfstream.

All from the humble beginnings of the Aero Commander.

Carnos: yep, NAA.

It's worth noting that this team was also responible for the Navion, which design NAA sold to Ryan as it became clear there was way more talent available than the postwar civilian market could absorb.
