Replacement or temporary fix for water meter cover
Posted by: pinkoos

Hi,

Our water meter cover washed away in the recent floods here in Houston. Luckily, that was the worst that happened to us. Many more were not so lucky.

Anyway, we contacted the City of Houston Water Dept and they are telling us it will take them 4 to 6 weeks to get us a replacement.

Does anybody know of any source to just purchase one if not too costly? Or, a temporary fix/cover that I can put over the meter box until the City sends us the replacement?

I'm worried that when water gets into the box, it will somehow mess up the meters and we'll have yet another issue with which to deal.

Thanks.

Most ( I think) water meters are mechanical, not electrical, so water getting in isn't an issue... Covering the hole to keep people from breaking an ankle, on the other hand, is.
I'd start with a piece of wood and a sand bag...

Yes, I think water meters are water proof or highly water resistant by design.

I'd see about getting a wood cover cut to fit and maybe strapping a couple of bricks to the underside to keep it in place.

I'm also curious as to the liability should someone fall into the opening while the City is getting around to replacing it.

Thanks for pointing out the liability issue. I hadn't thought of that.

My meter is submerged about 4 months a year, and wet maybe another 3. Just cover it.

Thanks for pointing out the liability issue. I hadn't thought of that.

It may be a non-issue where you live, but it would be good to know.

Anecdotally, I've heard tell around here about people being liable for injury occurring on damaged sidewalks in front of their property.

Yep, it won't hurt if water gets in and stays in, but you need to cover for safety. It needs to be something easily removed, so the meter reader can see it, if you still have a meter reader, that is.

Was it a concrete or cast iron cover in a sidewalk, or something similar in a grass strip?

Thanks for the info and link. I'll have to measure to see how big our box is. Wish they would just sell the cover and not the whole cover/box combination.

If this is just to stop someone twisting an ankle or snapping off something in the box - just cut a piece of plywood and put a rock or concrete block on it ?
