New Intel or G5 iMac?
Posted by: h linamen

Planning on buying two new 17 " iMacs. Will there be problems, bugs etc with intel which would justify buying the G5 from Amazon for $125 less after rebate? Or might the upgraded software etc justify the new platform even with some wrinkles?

Why do some in these forums expect the rest of us to predict the future?

It is what it is.

$125 less? It would have to be $500 less for me to consider buying a G5 iMac instead of the new Intel iMac.

Even with the possibility of bugs, this looks like a really good machine. Plus it will have all of the new versions of the bundled software. I don't expect the old Amazon G5 iMac would have the new software.

Unless you have legacy software that requires a G4/G5 and won't run (or won't run well) under Rosetta, I would get the new Intel iMac.

Perhaps I should rephrase, as I'm not asking for predictions about technical bugs.

INSTEAD, if it were you, would you buy the G5 or a first version of intel iMac?

As a general rule, I don't buy Rev. 1 new hardware.

HOWEVER: the current iMac design (which the Intel iMacs will apparently use) are honed to perfection from the previous versions, there's a bucket full of new software I don't have to pay for included, and I have no need of Classic (the Intel Macs can't run it).

I think the price would have to drop further on the G5 iMacs to dissuade me from the Intel iMacs at this point.*

*having said that, I just had to replace the damn brakes on my damn car today, so no new computer for me. If I'm lucky I'll be able to pick up a refurb Intel iMac when those show up in a few months.

I'm sort of thankful that I have to go overseas for a year starting this July. That means I won't be tempted to buy a new iMac. By the time I get back, the new Intel iMacs should be up to 3ghz and with a 24" screen...there goes my overseas bonus money.

Isn't the new iMac dual core? Isn't the older iMac single core? If so, then the dual core should be faster(?)...
