It's all too bizarre, I just finished the book on Sunday when I read The Smoking Gun's piece. There were many times when I had my doubts, but I figured the book has been out 2 years, and nobody had exposed him. I can't believe someone from his home town or college didn't expose his story. He basically thumbed his nose at AA, so I thought they would have called his b.s. too. These weren't simple embellishments. They were calculated lies, used to portray himself as a sympathetic character.

The author, James Frey will be on Larry King tomorrow. Should be entertaining. People have been looking to knock Oprah of her pedestal, and this guy is going to be devoured in the process. The media should have a fun week digging stuff up on Frey. Instead of dirt, they'll be digging for vanilla.

The idea that Oprah is going to change TV watchers into readers is a programming gambit.

If it were real she'd now be off the air for lack of viewership. It's a sop.

It's all a big "so what?". So some guy wrote some fiction and never let on to the audience that it was fiction.

If you all wanted to believe it, fine. That's your problem, not his.

He's a modern Andy Kaufman, nothing more. And no one got upset about Andy Kaufman...

Not exactly, Andy Kaufman was the protypical "in your face' performer. He upset a great many people on his way. You never met or saw Andy or you'd not have said that. He was an original lunatic.

Nice you know how to rate someone you seem to know nothing about.

*** Note to self ***
Do not ever mention Andy Kaufman on the OWC Forums EVER because i never met or saw him perform. It will just needlessly upset RgrF.
*** End of note ***

A Million Little Pieces was a huge mega bestseller in 2003. It was a National, International, NewYorkTimes bestseller. Amazon.com's Best Book of 2003. Not sure why Oprah waited 2 years to "discover" this book. Maybe because it coincided with Frey's follow-up? (My Friend Leonard) *shrugs* Next week, Oprah will "discover" Dan Brown's DaVinci Code.

It was the misstatement that caught my attention. Kaufman was the Howrd Stern of his day. He went on to challenge a woman to out wrassstle him, it went south after that. He went nuts and as they say the rest is a story someone made up about it.

Andy Kaufman was either one of those tormented comic genius' or just a nut who seemed funny. He was definitly different. He most definitely wasn't a throw away line like used above.

'nuff said.

In the same way that this guy and his book upset people?

If people want to get upset by words on a page, or by some "lunatic" on stage, that's their prerogative--and the author or performer holds no responsibility.

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.

And please show us all your "proof" that I "never met or saw Andy".

That you chose to be upset, doesn't mean that I was out to upset you.

Y'all need to grow up a little.

And how much of this Frey story is just modern yellow journalism? "We invent the news so we can make money. You're the suckers that pay for it."

Back to my original point. You said:
>He's a modern Andy Kaufman, nothing more. And no one got upset about Andy Kaufman...

that was simply so removed from fact that I felt it required a response.

Enough . Kaufman was what he was and we're what we are.

I've really enjoyed reading the Harry Potter biographies. At least J.K. Rowling didn't make stuff up to sell her books.

It's not Oprah's fault that she became mesmerized by a captivating book. She is not responsible for proving whether it is truly non-fiction. That is the responsibility of the author and the publisher. She is not the idiot here.

/mick e can't believe that he just defended Oprah Winfrey

Hey mick I have this Johnny Damon Caveman image someone did up for me when I was young and foolish, think I can offload it somewhere?

It's sitting on the other side of this partition and on those few occasions I need to go there, it's, well becoming an irritant.

Any suggestions?

Now he's Captain Cleanman.

Roger, you will at least be able to take solace in the fact that Samson has probably lost his strength as a result of the shorn locks.

Oprah should have the resorces to check out the Authors she promotes. If for no other reason as to not make her look the fool on the air. Somebody dropped the ball in Harpo productions on this one.

Must of been somebody she hired from Dan Rathers staff at CBS.

Doesn't the bible say "Thou shall not covet Oprah's ass"?
