USB wireless keyboard and audio conflicting
Posted by: dmag

I'm running a MBP and Yosemite. Because of a keyboard
issue I have a USB wireless keyboard hooked up.

Everything was fine until just now, when the system
audio began to freak out.

I get the audio icon on the screen, with a line going
through it and a clicking sound as I guess it alternates
between connection and disconnection.

If I pull the USB connector out it stops. However, then
I haven't got a keyboard.

As soon as the USB connector goes back in, it begins
all over again.

I've restarted and that doesn't help. Just replaced the batteries yesterday.

Any ideas. Thanks!

Have no idea. Verify the USB dongle isn't somehow selected in Sound system prefs.

Your comment is a bit confusing. Is it USB or is it wireless? These support articles from the mothership may help:

So there is a little USB gizmo that communicates with the keyboard?

So it reads like there's an RF dongle in a USB port talking to the keyboard.

Maybe try removing the dongle and all USB goodies (if any) and try a SMC reset?

This *might* be similar to unplugging a desktop for a few minutes.

Sorry, guys. I shouldn't have added "wireless"
and make it confusing.

Yes, there is a dongle in the USB port.

It does not show up in the audio prefs.

When I pull the dongle the problem goes away.
Put it back in and it goes bad again.

I'll try the SMC reset and read the docs provided.

Thanks!

Tried all the links to articles and nothing
offered a solution. The audio is clicking
on and off repeatedly, 3-4 times per second.

Weird.

Been sitting on this for awhile, trying to recall where I've seen this behavior before.

Finally occurred to me: User had a laptop with a wireless mouse dongle stuck in the side. Dongle got crushed between the side of the laptop and the floor in her cheap laptop bag. Until the dongle was pulled and examined carefully, it looked like it was fine when in fact the little plastic cap part was at a slight angle because the thing was bent.

Symptoms: Mouse worked intermittently and got weird audio pops (probably from bad ground on the broken USB dongle) while the dongle was connected.

Solution: Get a new wireless USB device to replace the broken one. (Even though the dongle was the only part that was broken, it was not available as a replacement part.)

Interesting. I'll try to run another keyboard on this and see if the performance is different.

Thanks for your input.
