Wife and I are looking for a show we both can watch... Any suggestions?
Posted by: spacescape

Wife and I can't seem to find anything we "both enjoy" right now. We did love "Dexter" and "Breaking Bad". Got her to watch some "House of Cards" but lost interest about 3-4 episodes into the second season. Orange is the new black... She liked the first season but lost interest. Couldn't get her into "Doctor Who"... Started watching "The Leftovers" but she said it looked depressing. SHE HATES WALKING DEAD!!! We both liked "The Following" ... she did drift away for a little while but came back for the last season.

So...... Any suggestions on something we could try and watch together? We have Amazon Prime, Netflix Streaming and HBO for 11 more months.

Thanks for any suggestions...

Bill

I second Firefly, Game of Thrones, and BBC's Sherlock (but beware... a "season" is 3 episodes.. and they go close to TWO YEARS between seasons... great show though!).

Got nostalgic for "Dead Like Me" the other day.. so I'll suggest that.

Breaking Bad, House of Cards, OITNB, split on Walking Dead. Sounds like me and the wife.

Blloodline (Netflix Series)
Drama thriller about a dysfunctional family owned B&B in Florida. Doesn't sound that interesting, but trust me, it's "slow burn". Stick with it for 2-3 episodes. smiling smiley

If you've never seen them maybe The Sopranos or The Wire on HBO.

On Netflix:
The Killing
Broadchurch
Bloodline

Amazon Prime
Justified

Edit:
If you have any Showtime options, Ray Donovan.

New on Netflix:
Jessica Jones
River

We both LOVED the Shield, also Justified and Deadwood.

And if you remember to place it in its proper time reference, I still stand behind both Buffy and Angel.

Also Freaks and Geeks.

Another vote for the BBC Sherlock on Netflix. I just finished the final episode yesterday. While it's true that each season only has 3 episodes, it's offset a bit by the fact that each show is 90 minutes long (as long as many movies).

Both Jessica Jones on Netflix and Man in the High Castle on Amazon Prime are getting really good reviews and word of mouth.

I've read the original comic series Jessica Jones is based on and that was great stuff. Don't let "comic series" put you off. This is not 'capes and tights' stuff. There are 'super hero' elements, but this is somewhat around the fringes of that world. The show features David Tennant (Dr. Who) and Mike Colter (The Good Wife).

For those familiar with comics, I'd ballpark it as somewhere between "Gotham Central" (the comic series, not the current TV permutation) and "Astro City" (the PHENOMENAL Kurt Busiek comic series).

The trailer looks great, and I'll be starting the series my next day off.

I don't have Amazon Prime, but the pilot for Man in the High Castle was available for free, and I really enjoyed that. It's based on the well worn trope of 'what if the Nazis won the war', but just from the pilot you immediately get that something's not quite right and that there's a potentially very interesting twist going on. If there's no other way to watch it, I'll have get a trial Amazon account and binge watch it.

If you don't mind paying for showtime, Homeland is fantastic.

Masters of Sex is pretty great too.

I know the feeling.

I really, really liked the show. However, I've watching it again, from beginning to end, and will do so down the road.

And I like the hat.

Most of the suggestions, while on my watch list, are pretty grim, so for something a little lighter, I enjoy Limitless. Justified had its moments when life wasn't grim, and there was a wry sense of humor from time to time.

I also like Longmire, and while good, it's not great, like Justified.

Oh, and full disclosure regarding Limitless, I am also really attracted to Jennifer Carpenter.

And Fargo?

It is time to start noticing the Leftovers as one of the best shows on TV. So worth trying that on HBO. It has a depressing vibe and theme, but whenever my partner complains about too much violence (about any show) I always say: there are more depressing deaths on Downtown Abby.

Anyway, the Leftovers is a show that gets better and better with each episode, so you have to get into Ep 6 or 7 during the first season before you realize you are hooked. Each episode tells a different story. Confusing like Lost, with a Twilight Zone weirdness mixed in. At this point in Season 2 currently, I have no idea what is going on or where the story is going.

Agent Carter will be back, and soon. There will be a two hour premiere Thursdsy, January 5 at 9pm. Here's the scoopage and a couple of clips.

And on the lighter side of fabulous, my house has fallen hard for "Life in Pieces" ("Mama LIKE."). And we've been fans of "Mysterys of Laura" since last season.

Another new comer that has got me hooked is "Code Black". Yes it's another medical drama, but the character development is plentiful and well done, and the requisite medical sequences are engrossing.

Finally, I just finished the first episode of "Jessica Jones" and it looks promising indeed.

Thanks, N-!

And we've been fans of "Mysterys of Laura" since last season.

LOL! I was going to mention Laura but I thought it might be too light and many procedurals don't seem to appeal to most here.

I was practically disgusted by the first episode. It seemed deliberately stupid in so many areas. I'm not a stickler about procedure (unless a subtle point is actually done right) as it's a TV show.

But from the second episode, I was a fan. For some reason I thought the show was cancelled, but then it showed up.

Color me pleased.

Don't waste your time on:

Bones-ran out of steam 5 years ago. They actually feature car ads in their scripts. They changed the makeup and lighting this year. They all look bored.
Castle-Silly network romance setup, bad mysteries. Nathan Fillian is as bloated as the scripts. Stick with Firefly for Nate.
Marvel's Agents of Shield- Bad scripts, shot for $95 an episode on Disney back lot. Going down the same confused junk path as Disney Once Upon A Time.
The Blacklist- Love James Spader. No-one else in the show can act worth a damn. Scripts are rotten. World's dumbest FBI agents.
Blindspot- World's second-dumbest FBI agents.
Code Black-Earthquake! Plague! Mass toenail fungus infection!
Any CW Show- What are you, 8 years old?
Two Broke Girls-Disgusting

Good scripts 90% of the time:
The Good Wife
Justified
Deadwood
The Shield
BBC Sherlock (Not Elementary -dreary CBS fodder)
very old episodes of The Big Bang Theory
The Wire
Luther-Idris Elba is excellent and Indira Varma is nifty the first year.

"Guess the villain by the second commercial" (good to play with wife as a betting game)
All CBS mysteries, Bones. No NBC shows, they are painful to watch. Also Good for betting games-Jeopardy.

Really, really dumb fun. Scream Queens (did I say dumb?)

The same episode over and over: Breaking Bad.
At least the characters explain who they and why they are there are in every episode: Game Of Thrones. (Gratuitous nudity and some of the UK's very best actors)

Downton Abbey is a good show to watch with the wife. You can make fun of the characters and try out the various class/regional accents on one another.

Orphan Black- your jaw will drop- give her an Emmy!

The Hollow Crown: Shakespeare’s History Plays (PBS Henry plays)- Tom Hiddleston is really good.

Nice analysis, Steve G. I won't disagree with any of it.

I will point out that, while the last five years of Bones has dropped off, the first 5-6 years were much better. If you're trying to kill some time, that's 110-130ish episodes.

Also, my wife and I love Scream Queens. I like the dumb, B-horror-movie atmosphere, and my wife likes the 80's music.

....Orphan Black.....is good is you want to do marathon of all seasons......

Bones is horrible (not sure why it is still on and why people watch Emily Deschanel (sp?) is the worst actress. the character is clinical but she makes her act like a robot)...

can't watch 'Good Wife' after the whole issue with Panjabi (and how she left)......and having to films scenes separates (really J. Margulies)......but saying they were shot together......

'Agents of Shield' was good season 1 but now is just going down the wrong path......haven't watched Once Upon a Time since season 1........too predictable and full of Disney 'cameo' inserts, awful plot lines and characters acting "out of character" too often.....

Game of Thrones is too horrible for me.

Will look into The Leftovers.

Another worth mentioning, in case you haven't already watched it, is The Mentalist. I watched the first 7 seasons over maybe 6 months and the last as it aired, really liked it.
