Pixelmator free, to subscribers...

...of Mac|Life magazine.

This appears to be a full desktop version, no code or registration required, so I'm not sure what happens at Update time as opposed to buying it through the Mac App Store ($30).

It doesn't seem to be very popular here, but it is free, and Photoshop Elements 14 is regularly $99 (which is also reviewed in this issue).

For what little I'd like to do, I think Pixelmator for free, will be adequate.

Pertinent information is on p.77 of the January 2016 (No.110) issue of Mac|Life.

I have it. I originally got it in a bundle many moons ago. I have even paid for an upgrade since. It is one of maybe 2 or 3 apps that i still use that came from a bundle. If you need more manipulation options than Photos/iPhoto and less than Photoshop or Gimp I would recommend giving it a try.

Mrs. Zealand and I use PixelMator all the time. I prefer a menu-and-keyboard-shortcut UI rather than PM's button based setup but it does have a Curves tool, which is essential for our uses.

I hate the dark UI. Can't wait for this particular design craze to go away. Acorn is more to my liking. That said, I don't regret paying a small price for a non-Adobe image editor. Maybe it will eventually be a better, more powerful solution.

It doesn't seem to be very popular here...

Not sure that's an accurate assessment.

Lots of people use it as a PS-alternative. Very powerful with frequent updates/improvements and excellent support.
