Growing up, I knew lots of twins who talked about who was the 'oldest'.

Now the poor boy has to go through childhood and adolescence with Sis saying "He was born in 2016, I was born in 2015".

At least the parents can claim one dependent on 2015 taxes. I always felt sorry for the folks who miss out by a couple minutes.

Don't the claimants have to have provided support for a minimum of six months to be able to claim?

Unless they changed the rules very recently, no. The dependent child just needs to have been born during the year. The six months rule is a different test of support, usually used in connection with shared custody after a divorce.

For tax purposes, those parents are psyched!

Not unless they make more than $150k (or whatever the rate is now). If youexceed the amount, you get no tax breaks at all...

Don't see why they couldn't just assign one birth date to both kids if they want to—unless they want to spread out the tax deductions between two years. it's just an artifact of time zones.

Except that in our documentation-hungry society, birth certificates are kind of hard to get around, unless they plan to engage in forgery.

Probably could ask the hospital records department to call them both December 31st. How accurate are the clocks there, anyway?

I was wrong about tax deductions: they're based on the number of kids, so you want them all ASAP, if possible.

The Adjusted Gross Income for determining the phase out is higher than $150K for couples - it was $305k for 2014 for married filing jointly. The $150+k figure is for married filing separately and there are other numbers for other filing statuses. And the exemption does not go away entirely for another $122k of AGI. The income numbers for the phase out are periodically adjusted for inflation, so may be higher for 2015 returns.

Exactly.

And to what end, just so the parents could claim them over two tax years instead of one? To hold birthday parties on the same day instead of separately (which will probably happen anyway, for awhile).

I just don't see a real upside in asking the hospital to falsify a birth certificate.

The one born in 2016 can claim tax credit one year longer than the one born in 2015, assuming laws don't change by then. For both kids the parents can claim tax credit for 18 years, right? no matter if they are born in 15 or 16.
