Has anyone here heard of and is fan of Van Morrison? He's not too bad.
Found his Moondance CD on the company free book shelf. A bit of wishy washy Brooklyn hipster type music. But not too bad. I'll give it a listen for free smiling smiley

There's a gal in my Facebook feed who will occasionally write reviews of bands she's discovering for the first time as if they're the newest thing (e.g. Led Zeppelin) and they're pretty hilarious.

He broke out not too long ago when they did one of his songs for Glee.

Glee? ANOTHER new show on the television?

They have singers on? Kind of like Ed Sullivan?

I wish I could find it, but a well known and of the same gen, Canadian folky was on FUV a few years back and said he had never heard of Van.
I lost total respect for that person.
It wasn't Neil or his elder idiot "sister", or Gordon, or Bachman, Turner or Overdrive ……

To say - not that familiar with Vans music, OK …..maybe.
But for this clown to say he'd never heard of Van……. that's like saying one didn't know that Paul was in another band before Wings. Or that Elvis had left the arena.

Even DL Roths ego ain't that big.

That was my first thought too, and I think he was being sarcastic -- but its not impossible.

I know zero about Country music -- and Im sure there are some performers who are a huge staple of the genre. Or get millions to their concerts.

But you could mention their name and I would have no clue who they are.

Like Alamaba. I know they are HUGE, since Vans time. I couldnt recognize any of their songs if you played them for me.

I saw Van back in the mid-Seventies when he played my college, I was in the first couple of rows. It was the tightest and most musically powerful concert I ever saw, the musicianship of Van and his band was just breathtaking. And the review in the school newspaper criticized the performance because Van didn't jump around enough...sigh.

Big fan here. Saw him in concert some 15 or 20 years ago; contemplating going to see him at the Santa Barbara Bowl this summer.

Sure you could. Listen for references to trucks, guns, double wide trailers, divorce, a cheatin' heart, barbed wire, Southern anything, cryin' in beer or makin' love to a horse. That'll git you through Alabamer and probably help you identify 85% of Country Music in general. drink smiley

I saw Them right after he left. I talked to the keyboard player (the guy with the black goatee) and asked where he was. He said he had just left. Every time he would mention Van, he would hold his arm straight out at shoulder-level and say, "little short guy."

Just for the record, the incomparable Steve Goodman and incredible John Prine wrote the song, and Steve recorded a brilliant performance of it himself.

Poor old Steve Goodman. Every time the topic of country music comes up someone mentions David Allan Coe's recording of "You Never Even Called Me by My Name" despite the fact that as far as I can tell Coe always made it clear that Goodman wrote the song. Supposedly Prine wrote it with him, but since Prine's name is not on the song that can be debated should one care to.

From interviews I saw, I think Goodman had almost completed the song when he showed it to Prine. Prine may have contributed a couple of lines, but Goodman was certainly the primary author of the song.

Goodman had the same issue with "City of New Orleans" and people thinking Arlo Guthrie wrote it.

Goodman was an incredible musician and songwriter, and even more impressive human being. We'll not see his like again.

It's a tune that some request if they want to hear "jazz" or some singers do to say they sing "jazz", which makes him crazy. While I understand his point, we have done it on request anyway and let it be our joke.

So when somebody says Moondance he assumes they're thinking it's a jazz song?

That's unfortunate.

Maybe someone should ask him to "play some jazz, like Kenny G!"
