Prank caller tricks Burger King workers into smashing windows

I wonder if this will become as widespread as "I'm calling from Windows about a problem with your PC".

Several employees of a Burger King fast-food outlet in Minnesota were persuaded by a prank caller posing as a fire official to smash the restaurant's windows, convinced that rising gas pressure was threatening to cause an explosion, police said Saturday.

Police in the Minneapolis suburb of Coon Rapids were dispatched to the scene Friday night after someone at a gasoline station next door called emergency services to report what appeared to be an act of vandalism in progress, police Captain Tom Hawley said.

The restaurant manager told arriving officers she had just received a phone call from a man identifying himself as a fire department official who seemed to have a working knowledge of commercial fire safety systems, which he asked her to check, according to Hawley.
....
After quickly ushering out the handful of customers who were present at the time, the manager and three other employees ran out to their cars, grabbed tire irons and other objects and began smashing all the glass ringing the building.

By the time authorities arrived, the employees had shattered virtually all the ground-floor windows, causing several thousand dollars in damage, Hawley said. One worker suffered minor cuts and was treated on the scene by medics.
....
He said investigators were trying to trace the origin of the prank, and were comparing notes with police in other cities around the country where similar phony calls have been reported at fast-food chains in recent days, including outlets in California and Oklahoma.

There are times I'm inclined to see 'street justice' implemented.

'Prank'.

Yeah, right.

Show us where they are currently earning that wage. Statistics show that they've fallen so far behind that the minimum wage today compared to 30 years ago would be somewhere around $ 22/hr or so.

While today's minimum wage won't support a family, it will support the owners and takers. Those families then get our support through taxes we pay, if the Waltons and other employers won't pay their employees a livable wage and then shunt those employees onto taxpayer rolls, well think about who is the taker in that case.

He didn't say they were making $15 an hour roger, but carry on with the ranting.

If you think that's a rant, well you've never seen a real rant.

Try addressing the subject matter for a change, repeatedly saying the Clintons suck doesn't really advance your campaign - it sways few and leaves you appearing like what The Donald often terms The Losers.

If you think you got screwed while Clinton was in office, well that pales in comparison with those millions who got screwed while your GOP guy sat on his ignorant ass and watched the economy almost go belly up.

When people are left feeling they were screwed by others, the truth is usually they screwed themselves and just need someone beside themselves to blame. That's a GOP standard isn't, take responsibility for yourself is the mantra but only when it applies to others, then blame the government if things don't go your way.

Right wing reactionaries are well funded and so self absorbed they have no clue about what's real in the world or really important to anyone but themselves.

This discussion reminds me of something I heard about Ralph Nader once-- that he would kick the dog and cuss out the hired help when he got home at night after a long day of fighting for the underdog.

"The restaurant manager told arriving officers she had just received a phone call"

The manager fell for it?

That's what it sounds like.

the undercurrent of disdain and even contempt for service industry employees that some people gleefully exhibit never ceases to amaze me.

I'm used to seeing this stuff happen in Florida but I thought Minnesotans were smarter than this… And, yes, there are very underpaid although this manager will soon have the opportunity to find better employment.

Exactly.

Where's the contempt for the 'prankster'?

Ah, none needed, it was just a 'prank', just somebody having a little fun, nothing *bad*.

Obviously they would be smart enough to recognize "the prank" and not fall for it, if they only were paid $15 per hour.....

Given the right tone, delivery, and panic induced situation, many people could fall for this. It is typical of fight, flight, or freeze, to react and be told how to react in stressful situations rather than take time to think rationally.
