how to move a PDF onto iPhone?
Posted by: Mr Downtown

I have a PDF (of the Tokyo subway network, in English) that it would be mighty nice to have on my iPhone so I could figure out where to change trains. I have a PDF app called GoodReader on the iPhone already. The part I can't figure out is how to move the PDF from my computer to my iPHone.

I guess I could turn it into a JPEG, but I don't know how to move one of those onto the phone, either.

Mr Downtown,

Dropbox is perfect for this! I use it for similar tasks.

For something as complex as a Tokyo subway map I would get a decent size paper map.
And BILINGUAL (not just English) in case you need to ask motion for help.

But if you must get it onto your iPhone, convert to jpg and email it to yourself. In the email, along the bottom, if you click on the curvy arrow icon it asks if you want to save the image. Then it'll be accessible in your "Photos" on the iPhone.

Do you use iCloud? Goodreader can access iCloud documents if you permit it.

There are many different ways to do this. The easiest is probably to add it to iBooks on your computer, then set it to include the PDF file when you sync your phone. O, email it to yourself. Open it on your iPhone and then click the box with an arrow in the lower left and select 'Copy to iBooks' or whatever ever other option you want that's convenient.

Not actually answering your question, but the Tokyo Metro has an official free app designed to help tourists navigate the subway. There’s other apps as well, some of them 99 cents, some of them as much as $7.

Well that was helpful?

There are at least a half dozen ways, and you dont need to download a PDF reader or to turn it into anything else. Dont get hung up on that part.

You know, they have Acrobat for the iPhone...

emailing it to yourself seems like a no brainer -- or even texting it to yourself via imessage. But if you arent doing either of those then
I agree with Robert, dropbox would be easy. Free. And it even has its own built in PDF reader so you dont have to use a seperate app.

How would he get it from his windows 10 machine to his Galaxy S6?

I have an app called Documents that can read PDFs. The process of getting PDFs on the iPhone is probably easiest via Dropbox, though. Otherwise, you have to futz with doing it through iTunes, a process that I find annoying.

I always use email. Of course, these types of maps often allow zooming and therefore, especially for Tokyo, can be quite large.

how to move a PDF onto iPhone?
  1. Put it into iBooks
  2. Open iBooks on your iPhone
There is no step 3.

(And, yes, fauch—it does "just work.")

I know you used to be able to just drag/drop them into one of the folders in iTunes and then sync your phone. That's what I did years ago to get a bunch of PDFs onto my iPad. But I think the iBooks suggestion is the easiest.

Well, I found a Help section in GoodReader that laid out the steps, including the one where you're supposed to know that the row of words Summary Info Apps Music ... across the top of iTunes are tabs. UX FAIL.

I guess I had just assumed there would be some common file storage area, like on a computer. Things like iCloud assume you'll always have phone service, and lots of other things like Evernote are no longer available for iOS7. My Dropbox is full of many megs of files waiting for client review, so I don't want to burden my iPhone with all that stuff.

For one file, I would email then load into iBooks.

For many files, a folder and Dropbox are the simplest way to go.

Alas, no selective sync on iOS yet:

Dropbox on iOS doesnt work like that -- it only "shows" you the files in your DB.

You have to tell it what files to download to your phones storage to view later.

For example, my DB is 60 GB -- that aint fitting on my phone -- but I can pull down any file I want

Dropbox or other cloud storage services are great for this kind of thing.

I have a reference folder full of PDF manuals (owners/repair/diagrams) that I can access from any iDevice and location necessary.

Not gonna touch the iCloud/iTunes/iBooks ecosystem with a ten foot pole for this kind of task.

Anything stored in an Apple library nowadays is at risk of being intermingled and eaten by the hard sell media rental and storage services they want to drive users toward.

Thanks, but transit maps are my area of professional expertise. Actually, English/Romanji is quite widespread these days (a little less so on the private railways) and the map I found is unique in showing all the different networks together.

Dropbox sounds great—but requires iOS 8 or later.
