Vacation rental sites, what works best? VRBO? Airbnb? Other?

I'm looking to rent a cottage or small house in Monterey area for a couple of days. Usually I use VRBO, but not a lot is showing up (probably because we have 6 people). What other sites do people use, and what sites do you think are the best for these kinds of things?

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I'm partial to Airbnb and have booked several long weekend house rentals through them with good experiences. I have also checked out VRBO but the prices seem to be a little higher. I know people who rent their properties out through both and they have said that VRBO charges a higher fee for their listings, and just raised it again recently again so they have to pass on the higher cost to their potential renters.

I haven't used Airbnb. Wasn't there an issue with them requiring all sorts of personal information that could potentially lead to identity theft if they were hacked?...or is all that past tense now?

The entire "verification" process seems goofy to me.

Take a photo or upload an image of your government-issued ID, such as your driver's license or passport Depending on where you live, you may have the option of answering a few questions about yourself instead
Connect another online profile to your Airbnb account, such as a Facebook, Google, or LinkedIn account
Upload an Airbnb profile photo and provide a phone number and email address

Why should I give anyone any information besides my credit card number?

As a lessor, I suppose the verification gives me some peace of mind - and Airbnb isn't just people's vacation homes that they're renting out. We use airbnb regularly and recently listed the other property we own on it.

I've used both, domestically and internationally. But I always check local rental manager listings, it's not uncommon for a place to be listed on Airbnb or vrbo to also be listed with a local office as well -- and usually at a discount. You can often find local listings by googling property descriptions you see on the big sites.

I'm not suggesting you should use vrbo to identify a rental and then save money by cutting vrbo out of the deal. But use it to find local property management services that offer short term rentals. There are still many property owners who list their properties with a local agent but not Airbnb or vrbo.

Local craigslist.

Also, with vrbo, if there are a number of places with availability, I will contact 5 or 10, offering them 80 or 90% of their asking price. I often get a yes.
