Personal security on a Mac computer - not sure if this will apply to you

I was searching for a file on my Mac yesterday & typed in a keyword in the Finder search box. I don't remember the keyword but was searching for a file I had downloaded.

I ended up finding a bunch of text messages from up to 3 years ago that I had deleted off of "Messages" years ago.

There was nothing that I wouldn't want anyone to see but there could have been. If you use Messages for private info you might check if there is anything you might want to delete.

I'm running 10.11.4 on an iMac.

Here is the path to the old messages:

~Library/Containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/Messages/Archive/

where "~" is you home directory.

Also any attachments (pictures) to these messages are located on this path:

~Library/Containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/Messages/Attachments/

If this is old news or doesn't apply to you, ignore it.

Not sure how they ended up here unless my computer was improperly shut down or crashed.

The NSA would appreciate it if you would leave those alone!

Fred,

That is where data is saved now (last 2-3 OSes). The problem is that it is still saved after you deleted it in the app. You have Time Machine if you want to retrieve anything you deleted. Why does that stuff remain?

My whole data file is less than 8MB, so I think those "files" are just snapshots, not the file itself. Did you try opening one?

Remember how when you were little
you could just rip off your diaper and
just run around naked and everyone
thought it was so cute and funny?

Anyway, I need bail money.

Fred,

Did you try opening one?

When I double click them, they open in messages. Here's one that's a little over 2 years old.

I always thought when you deleted them in messages, they were gone.
