Swapping ZIF Chips - Any Problems?
Posted by: MacMagus

I've got a 5-year old XLR8 G4/450 ZIF that I want to put in a Beige G3 running Panther.

Do I need to install the MachSpeed Control software to enable the cache?

What difficulties should I expect?

I don't think you need control software under X.

Don't forget to set the correct jumper pins on the MOBO. You know, the ones under the tape. You have to configure the ratio with those pins. It's not on the zif chip; it's on the mobo in the G3's.

As I recall... certain PL and Sonnet upgrades didn't require any changes.

I don't know how that was, but there were some.

The one I have in the smurf DID require it. I popped it up an extra 50MHz without trouble. I left the bus speed alone (on a Beige).

Skylane and Lew Zealand (both?) pushed theirs to insane performance numbers with success.

I couldn't, which is why I bought the smurf.

jimmy, that's some of the Powerlogix chips, as I was just taught by the kind folks at OWC. My B&W is now humming along at 1Ghz...

MacMagus, my recollection is that you DO need the software to enable the cache. Without it, the ZIF will still work, you just won't get as good performance without the cache being enabled...
