Thanks Tim.

Invite the world to a talk about long overlooked Macs, and open by talking about iPhone and iOS10, because those haven't gotten much attention lately.

How about some respect for people's time... Grrr...

Your browser doesn’t support live streaming of the event.

Live streaming uses Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) technology. HLS requires an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with Safari on iOS 7.0 or later, a Mac with Safari 6.0.5 or later on OS X v10.8.5 or later, or a PC with Microsoft Edge on Windows 10. Streaming via Apple TV requires an Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation) with software 6.2 or later or an Apple TV (4th generation).

A MacBook Pro with 4gig of graphic card vram is a solid step forward.

The fact that the touchbar is already integrated into Final Cut and Resolve is another sold step forward.

Of course, these are probably $3k machines but that might just be the price of admission to portablability and media editing.

I'm looking forward to editing with two hands.

It could be great.

I hope it is.

Be well.

I think it will be very helpful in revealing tools that are not immediately obvious to someone who doesn't already know about them, or does not know the keyboard shortcuts for everything.

I have to admit, the MacBook Pro does seem to be a great update.

It seems like a very powerful machine, you can max it out with a 2TB SSD (+$1200), and boost the processor up to 2.9GHz (+$200) but the RAM is set at 16GB. Now maybe with the faster RAM, system bus and SSD you can get along fine without more than 16GB, but I am used to 24GB or more so that's a limitation that gives me pause.

The way they are positing it, especially with the pro edit studio imagery with the dual 5K displays, external RAID, and audio monitors, it seems like a direct replacement for the MacPro. My concern with that is how loud will the fans on the MBP unit itself get when you are really cranking it? A MacPro, new or old, has much more capacity to keeps things cool and quiet. I have the last generation MBP 15", maxed out, and that cool graphics heavy weather map website gets the fans going full blast after a few seconds. I wouldn't want to deal with that while editing audio or video.

Did everyone notice it still has a minijack for headphones??

I've got hate for this product announcement from Apple, to be sure.*

I think the worst part is the product lineup for the MacBook Pros now... They've retained one previous generation model of each screen size, two new touch bar models in each screen size, and added the weird bastardized MacBook Pro for MacBook Air users... And they're still selling MBAs and MacBooks. NOTE - there is no longer a 13" MacBook Pro with DVD drive available! (I must admit I don't know exactly when that dropped off... but I wouldn't be surprised if it was today.)

I'd rather see the trackpad replaced with a touchscreen than removing the physical keys from the function row; most especially the escape key which I use all the time to response to dialogs.

The software escape key displayed in the Touch Bar is strangely always offset a quarter to half inch to the right of the key below it... This strikes me as an odd muscle-memory destroying change.

Apple's probably holding up new desktops/iMacs until they can figure out how to get the touch bar on an external keyboard... I'd wager they're going to send the video to it from the computer over Tbolt, which will be expensive. The way *I'd* do it if it were my ship to engineer would be to essentially embed an iOS device in the keyboard to control that display (already doing some of that work to integrate the TouchID by including that ARM cpu) and some storage to hold the visual elements, then leverage one of the many existing inter-device communication protocols to send the manipulation data back and forth. Of course, that might turn out to be even more expensive... but it would lay the groundwork for a more meaningful innovation with a truly integrated iOS/macOS device where the Mac shuts down while playing a movie full screen through iOS.

*All of this could maybe be saved if that TV functionality is also available for Mac. But I suspect that is iOS-only on AppleTV, iPhone and iPad.

Not until they take it apart. It took OWC 6 months(?) to make larger drives for the 2015 MBPs

So if a ton of internal storage is important for you, then order accordingly.

Not sure if waiting to buy makes any diff. The specs arent gonna change for at least a year.

Perhaps Apple has decided this is where your muscles should have been trained for all along? That little esc key is quite a reach sometimes...

I have nearly given up all confidence they will ever replace the MacPro... Still, I figure they have until the pro apps (Adobe Creative Cloud) start to drop support on El Capitan (10.11) to come out with something, seeing as how that is the highest OS the 2009 MacPros can run. We have many of these at my work and at that point we will essentially be forced to get the latest MBP or iMacs.

The 2009 Mac pro candy left to have the same firmware has the 2010. Then they are essentially identical, other than the original video card.

Fan noise is one of the reasons I swapped my Retina MBP 15" for a Mac Pro, especially since I wasn't even using the internal LCD.

MagSafe is apparently dead. 3rd parties make USB-C "MagSafe" adapters for CHARGING only. No data transfer with a "MagSafe" like adapter.

So you could still get a power supply with a MagSafe USB-C connection?

Just started wondering- The MBP body is aluminum, so where is the ferrous metal? Are there magnets inside the MBP that the MagSafe connector is attracted to?

Magsafe, arguably the best reason to buy a macbook over a cheap windows laptop, is officially dead.

This is a disgustingly lame product announcement. After years of no updates, they bring out something that can do nothing that previous machines can't already do, though it is a couple of millimeters thinner and has a touchscreen (albeit only 1/2 inch wide). Apple is dead, long live Apple.

Let me know when to divest of my 10s of 1000s of dollars worth of Apple shares. (should have done it years ago).

Vic,

Lots of USB-C to USB 3.0 female adapters on the market. Cheap and plentiful. All under $10.00 at Amazon.com. No name brands but definitely available. I believe they should work with the ports on the new Macbook Pro models.

Hi everyone,

I wasn't overly surprised by the changes to the Macbook Pro, though I have to say removing the escape key seems moronic. Apple should have kept it in place and let the touch screen cross the entire top of the keyboard rather than be not as long and center justified. To me, it looks wonky. Likely, when I replace the Macbook Pro I use on the road, I'll probably go for a last year's model Macbook Air or possibly the base model of the new Macbook Pro 13". I've no interest in the touch screen.

The TV app is intriguing. It's a rip-off of a similar app I saw on Smart TVs that use the Google system. Now Apple needs to make a homekit wireless antenna/tuner to use with the AppleTV. That way, the TV app connects to the antenna/tuner and you can use it to watch over the air TV. 'course, this doesn't fit into Apple's business model of selling you TV content on iTunes and such. So, I don't foresee it appearing anytime in the future.
