Faxing options if ditching landline?

Hi,

We're considering ditching our landline and were looking into options for sending faxes - I have a free fax number through one of the societies to which I belong, so receiving is not an issue. But, how does one go about sending faxes from home without an actual phone line?

Thanks.

I have had good results with online fax services. There's some hesitancy in that you are trusting the image to a middleman on teh interwebs. On the other hand, you have no control over who picks it up from the fax machine on the other side. Bid accordingly.

I haven't used any of these, but they are ones I researched after I cancelled my paid account but before realizing I haven't had a real need to send a fax in so long. If I do, it's for work, so I just use the real fax machine.

[faxzero.com] send 3 pages with adds for free, $2 for 25 pages.

[www.onlinefaxes.com] $36/year for 25 pages/month

[www.onesuite.com] $3/month, 2.5ยข/outgoing page

I use iFax and it works great for the infrequent faxing that I do. The per page cost is high but that's ok with me since I don't send very often.

Thanks for the replies so far.

For those of you who've replied, did you cancel your landline (just curious)?

No, we have a regular landline right now that we want to get rid of (and not replace with VOIP or anything like that).

Email pdfs?

Not accepted by a fairly large number of organizations. Fax has legal precedent and regulation behind its acceptance, emailed PDF's do not.

As an example, last year the company contracted to handle health Flexible Spending Accounts for state employees here would only accept faxed or snail-mailed copies of receipts to verify expenditures. No option for submitting a scanned to PDF version electronically through their website or by email.

I would love to cancel my land line but my wife insists on keeping it. I will eventually move it to some type of IP service. I have an all-in-one printer with fax but decided I didn't want to hassle with wiring etc. So I just use iFax. I only fax maybe twice a year though.

I successfully faxed with my OOMA, whenever I need it, about every four months. OOMA is great, all you do is pay for the unit initially, about $100, and then it is around four dollars per month. That includes unlimited calling.

Pinkoos,

Get a google voice number. Purchase an Obihai VOIP box. Affiliate the number with the Obihai box. Instant VOIP line that can be used for normal calls and faxes. Buy the box and you're done. No monthly fees. Free calls within the US and dirt cheap calls outside of the country.

I haven't paid for VOIP/landline service in over a year. Send and receive faxes multiple times each month. I have a two-line Obihai box. My primary number is my old Verizon landline number, which I ported over to AT&T wireless and then to Google Voice. My wife has a Google Voice number, which is the one we use as a dedicated fax line.

Search the forum for details about using Google Voice with an Obihai box.
