RIP Gwen Ifill

From Politico:

Quote

Gwen Ifill, the longtime news anchor who had served as a co-host of PBS’s NewsHour and as moderator of “Washington Week,” has died, PBS has confirmed, after a battle with cancer. She was 61.

"I am very sad to tell you that our dear friend and beloved colleague Gwen Ifill passed away today in hospice care in Washington," WETA president and CEO Sharon percy Rockefeller wrote in an email to staff at the public TV station Monday. "I spent an hour with her this morning and she was resting comfortably, surrounded by loving family and friends... Earlier today, I conveyed to Gwen the devoted love and affection of all of us at WETA/NewsHour. Let us hold Gwen and her family even closer now in our hearts and prayers."

Ifill had been absent from PBS’s election coverage last week due to ongoing health issues. She also took a leave of absence from the public broadcaster in May to get medical treatment.

I really loved this woman's coverage. She was a luminary journalist.

I'm very sad about this. She was easily my favorite television journalist. She was so good, so authoratative and so enthusiastic about her work. I was not aware she was sick so this news is a terrible, unwelcome shock.

2016 sucks.

Only 61... Way too young. Had great respect for her... RIP.

Just devastated. Such an inspiration for me.

This is horrible news. I knew she was ill but did not know her death was so imminent. Heartbreaking.

I just heard this too! Shocked. She was so young, but sickness, death gets us all. I really liked her.

A terrible loss. We have watched Washington Week in Review for the news long before cable.

Washington Week was my wife and my favorite show. We loved Gwen and always wondered how she never appeared to age. A truly beautiful person.

Very sad.

A good, old-fashioned, working journalist.

A loss for our country.

May Gwen's family and friends take solace in her many good deeds.

Be well.
