The funniest movie ever made?
Posted by: davester
Date: November 21, 2016 09:35PM
My wife and I were just doing some funny movie lines at the dinner table. The one that tickled our fancy the most was...
"MMMMM!"
"Oh, do you like it? I'm not partial to desserts myself, but this is excellent."
"Who are you talking to?"
"To you. You just made a yummy sound, so I thought you liked the dessert."
I didn't make a yummy sound, I just asked you what it is..."

So, forumites, what do you think is the funniest movie ever made, and/or the funniest ever movie line. For myself, despite being a total Monty Python fan, Young Frankenstein is pretty much unbeatable.

I'm not going to make this a poll so as not to influence you unduly.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I may be the only person outside of Australia who enjoyed "Young Einstein" with Yahoo Serious.

More seriously, "Broadway Danny Rose" had me laughing more than most movies.

My immediate thoughts were Airplane and Caddyshack. Several Mel Brooks movies come to mind as well, listed above plus History of the World, Part I.

when I was about ten years old, I saw Return of the Pink Panther. At that point I laughed so hard I thought I would die, and to this day, at that particular moment in time, that was the funniest movie ever.

One of the funniest I recall seeing was What's Up Doc? Had an aching stomach from laughing so hard when I first saw it in the theater.

The In-Laws
Airplane!
Young Frankenstein
Blazing Saddles
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

The automated-lunch scene from Charlie Chaplin's "Modern Times" is a classic. Have to say it's even funnier than the assembly-line scene from the same movie.

Night at the Opera is a great choice (add Duck Soup). Raising Arizona is also a good pick.

I'd add Truffaut's Day for Night. Somewhat more curiously, I've thought that Treasure of the Sierra Madre is also a great comedy.

And almost anything with Buster Keaton or Harold Lloyd.

Davester alluded to the Great Works, but surely Monty Python has to be here...Holy Grail?

I'm not really much of a straight comedy movie fan anymore, however I do like a drama that has some good humor as part of the mix.

The movie Sideways comes to mind.

4. Coming to America

There are so many and I'm too breathless and nervous to remember since I joined this late. Hep me!

Since the question was "movie" and not "movie scene," my nominations are:
- The Naked Gun
- Young Frankenstein
- Something About Mary

Airplane and Animal House are up there too.

Blazing Saddles has some very excruciatingly funny scenes but it also has many very painfully dated elements; in my opinion the movie as a whole just doesn't stand up all that well in the 21st century.

I adore Monty Python but the movies are mostly a series of sketches strung together on a thin plot pretense. One of my favorite scenes is the "Mr. Creosote" routine where the enormously fat guy eats himself into explosion, and the supercilious waiter leads the camera out into the country under dubious pretenses and then tells it to eff off.

Interesting that you chose the remake. I thought the original (starring Pierre Richard) [www.amazon.com] was fantastic, but the Tom Hanks remake was only mildly funny in comparison.

I agree completely with There's Something About Mary, and Caddyshack. Airplane was pretty good.

On the other hand, I disagree with Blazing Saddles. Even with Gene Wilder - Oy. Young Frankenstein was a little better. And Mad, Mad, World is a prime example of combining a ton of comic talent to produce something that's less than the sum of it's parts...way, way less.

For the most part, ditto.

The easy exception for me is the first movie that immediately came to mind...

"Clearance, Clarence. Roger, Roger. Vector, Victor." "A hospital--what is it?! It's a big building with lots of beds, but that's not important right now."
Airplane!

I also loved the Naked Gun series (not to mention the short-lived TV series Police Squad).

Ghostbusters
Animal House
Caddyshack
Stripes
There's Something About Mary
Kentucky Fried Movie (and a similar movie, The Groove Tube)
were also good.

There was a movie I saw when I was a kid which at the time I thought was the funniest thing I had ever seen, but I haven't seen it since and doubt it would hold up in adulthood: Start the Revolution without Me.

I liked Mel Brooks' stuff in general. However, I have never actually watched all of either Young Frankenstein or Blazing Saddles, just bits and pieces.

The Fletch series wasn't bad. Same for The Blues Brothers, Hot Tub Time Machine, and the Austin Powers series.

And this might sound weird, but I like slapstick, so while overall I definitely would NOT rate them as good, the Home Alone series has some funny scenes.

I'm sure there's lots I'm forgetting.
