Sorting numbers — not coming out right

Hi,

Trying to sort lines of text by numbers, in ascending order. Example:

12 Bill
13 Allan
14 Tina
16 Bonnie
169 Jason
19 Trey

This is true in Numbers, Pages, and a freeware text editor.

Jason with 169 should show on top, then Trey at 19, but the way Apple apps (or the system) sorts, it doesn't work that way.

I could manually re-enter each item in a spreadsheet, with name and number in separate columns, but there are some 1,000 entries and I'm hoping for a workaround. Tried every search I could think of but no solution.

If this isn't possible, would you know of a command in Numbers to separate the names into column A and the numbers into column B?

Thanks for any help.

What happens if you put the numbers in column 2 instead of column 1? Then sort by ascending or descending order.

Gonna ask my Mother if that offer to slap
me into next year is still on the table.

Its sorting text-style. Have you tried substituting "001", "016", etc? In excel, you can set the format of the column to numeric (or something like that); I would guess Numbers would have something similar.

Well, there’s no reason you’d need to enter them all manually into a spreadsheet. Replace that space with a tab and import them to a spreadsheet, sort, export back to your text editor, change tab back to a space.

Get the free TextWrangler. Sort Lines… with the "Numbers match by value" option enabled.

My quick guess is you are pasting into the spreadsheet as text. You need to format the column with numbers, as numbers.

Much appreciated, AA.

I forgot how good Text Wrangler is. Hadn't used it in a long time.
