Not sure why, but I started wondering how others use a trackpad on the laptops (or the magic track pad).... for some reason I move the cursor with my index finger and "click" with my thumb-- harkens back to when there was a separate trackpad and mouse. So, what do you do?....

middle finger to move.
middle finger to click and double click <-- I guess that would be "tap"

middle and ring tap for control click

middle and ring for scrolling

middle and thumb for click drag <-- but thats an actual click. Click and hold down.

One finger to scroll, then pray that my single tap will land the cursor in the right spot on this forum. I've long ago given up trying to place the cursor in the middle of a word. (Using my iPad 3.)

I do very little actual clicking - I use tap instead of clicking whenever possible.

But sometimes I use the base of my thumb that is always resting on the corner of the trackpad to click while using index and/or middle finger to move around. [magic trackpad - I don't do this on laptops]

So I voted, "I'm MAVIC" - or I would have...

Trackpad != Touchscreen. Don't confuse this with mentioning tablet behavior (or is there an Apple iCloud setting to make it seamless operation between iOS and macOS that I don't know about)?

Think it depends on how you have your trackpad preferences setup.
Use two fingers to scroll
Index and middle finger
Use index finger to Click and move cursor

Index finger is my go to digit for doing stuff like pointing and tapping. But on my Logitech Touch Mouse on Windows 7, the middle finger is the shifting and scrolling finger. To the point that it gets a little ouchy at the end of the day.

jardster, I do the same as you.

I use a 2015 MBPR from time to time, it's new-fangled trackpad encourages me to do something else.

Still not used to it, though!

Same, but another big reason for it is having frequently used it on a flight. It's also an issue in cars. When you're going up and down, having one finger be able to both move and tap ends up in a lot of extra taps.
