OT: alexa users?

Hi there. I wanted to ask any users whether Alexa responses get better the more you use it? I've had mine for a week and half the time, it says it doesn't understand the question. For example, it kept having problems with movie times at a local theater, etc. and is not understanding the names of local cities. Thanks in advance.

A friend of mine has Alexa for months now. It still has trouble understanding to set a simple 10 minute timer.

Physical location matters a lot.

I find that if my Echo sits 6 inches in on the shelf, it can't understand most of my commands on the first try.

If I move it to the edge of the shelf then it gets 9 out of 10 commands on the 1st try.

They all work so well in TV ads. Real life, they all struggle. Siri has gotten better over time, or maybe we figured out how to ask questions better.

Our is just managing to play Christmas music. Raising the thermostat is hit or miss.

My brother got me an Echo Dot last week and it works really well. He also bought me a TP-Link LED light bulb and I connected it to the Dot. I can say "Echo, lights 50%" and it responds quickly and consistently. I asked it to play The Stranglers, play the Beatles, Play Genesis and it got all of those right too.

The only time it has trouble is when it's playing music since it sits near the speakers for the stereo.

Check location. Your experience seems much worse than ours.

Thanks for all the suggestions. It sounds like Alexa doesn't personalize or get better for individual users. I don't have any smart home devices or cloud stored media. My accent is pretty middle america, so i think i'm going to return it after the new year. Maybe try a new physical spot or but ......

PS we have changed some of our language with the Echo. I use 'pause' to end lots of commands and timers.
