Decided to look into getting Applecare for a machine last evening. Looked at the usual places...b&h, lacomputercompany.com, both of whom I'd purchased from before. After remembering a comment someone here at MRF had made a few weeks back, I decided to see if Apple could beat the best price I had seen. I went to apple.com, found applecare, put in my cart, then in my cart, clicked the "chat" button. I asked if they could do any better on price. The CS agent asked if I had any discounts from working at a company or university or organization that might apply. None. She asked if I had any family members that might qualify....I answered with "well, I have a cousin that works at ______ and another cousin that works at ______" She started checking both of those. Then, I remembered that my mother-in-law works at a university, and that was the ticket. About 25% off normal retail. I'm guessing that's the normal EDU pricing for Applecare, but at any rate, it was worth my effort.

I didn't have to supply any proof, or even share my MIL name. Just mentioning that got the discount.

So, to me it seems like just about any interpretation of "family" would work to nab a discount on applecare. That long lost 3rd cousin that works at a university? Use it! Maybe hardware is more stringent, I don't know. But at least try it on Applecare.

Yes, this works. I got $169 Applecare for my iMac for $119. Better than any price even from "shady" eBay sellers.

I think probably just about every school you can think of would qualify. My MIL works at a small private university, and if that's eligible, probably most others are as well!

US Postal Service and a fortune 500 pharma company. Again, I think the EDU discount that I got because of my MIL is likely more than the discount from what either of the two companies would have offered. Do you know anybody who works at an EDU institution? You can construe "family" to mean an awful lot...
