What can you recommend for breakfast that DOESN'T include eggs or sugar?
Posted by: hal

I don't have anything against eggs - I just can't eat them every day for breakfast, but I'm getting really tried of almost every other option containing sugar.

So... what's for breakfast that doesn't include eggs or sugar?

.....oatmeal (steel cut oats).....cereal: Cheerios, shredded whole wheat bite-sized (you can add sugar substitute like Stevia, etc. to either options)......waffles.......what about french toast (less eggy)..........

.....asian options.....they eat congee with various additives (salty/savory - though they have sweet congee as well)....seafood congee.....chicken congee.....pork or beef congee.....thousand year old egg congee......fish congee, etc.

Going to second Toast.... it's my go-to breakfast.

I'm also going to BIG second a savory rice congee!
Discovered it when I was in Thailand last year, and I've started making it for myself once in a while. Cook rice with about a 6 to 1 water ratio, using some chicken stock in place of about 1/3 to 1/2 of the water. Cook it until the rice grains are breaking down into "porridge". Add a splash of low sodium soy sauce, and a splash of fish sauce. Toss in a few medium-ish meatballs, dump on some chopped green onions, and a sparing helping of chopped thai bird peppers. A splash of vinegar on top is good too.
It's a savory, non-sweet, stick-to-your-ribs breakfast!

Now that I'm thinking about it, I might make some for breakfast this weekend!

My wife calls them 'rocks'.

I buy them as either generic or commercially as 'Grape Nuts.'

Robert - I gotta ask... why would you suspect that it's not serious?

I like Paul's idea... well not THAT recipe, but something rice based might work. I have a Japanese friend that likes savory oatmeal - I tried it and found it repulsive, but she WON'T do sugar for breakfast so she gets creative.

Looks like most are resigned to doing something with eggs and/or sugar every day.

I make pumpkin oatmeal squares. No eggs but there is sugar in the recipe. That could be adjusted according to taste. It is difficult to avoid sugar in many products as whole grains are hard to eat without some sweetener.

I do have a recipe for oat bread. That with some peanut or sunflower butter (there are brands without sugar) would work.

Cereal - just check the label for the amount of sugar. Raisin Bran contains a heck of a lot. 6 grams or less is not bad. Better yet is if sugar/corn syrup/cane juice crystals do not appear in the ingredients. Better not to use any sort of sweetener; after a while, you won't miss the sweetness for most cereals.

I almost never have anything for breakfast that has sugar in it. I'm not entirely sure whether or not you're joking. Here are a few options:
Bagels with butter or cream cheese (also great to add capers, tomatoes, and/or lox)
English muffins with butter
Toast with butter and/or peanut butter (I also like it with marmalade but that has sugar)
Croissant
Leftover cold pizza
Blue/rasp/blackberries with plain yogurt
Plain yogurt (avoid the sugar-packed stuff in the markets)
Greek yogurt
Grapefruit (no, you don't need to sprinkle sugar on it...embrace the pucker)
Melon (also good with yogurt)
Home fries
Crepes with yogurt, creme fraiche, lemon, fruit, etc.
...and, as mentioned above, and most importantly of all....BACON!!!!

Hal,

The reason I asked because there are more answers to your question than I can list in a post and a _huge_ number of them are incredibly obvious. That and there is a difference between items containing naturally occurring sugar like fruit and oatmeal (yes, even oatmeal) and food that has sugar added to eat. It's far easier to avoid food with added sugar. Just look at the package and you'll know if the item has it.

FWIW, my breakfast rarely includes eggs and added sugar. Naturally occurring sugar, yes, added, no. Case in point, today's breakfast was a cup of coffee with half and half and xylitol and a cup of plain low-fat yogurt. Tomorrow I might have my coffee and a bowl of plain ol' oatmeal. Even the oatmeal has naturally occurring sugar in it.

I don't really care for plain eggs any more so I'll make Mexican or southwest scrambled eggs. They can be a good way to use up some small amounts of leftover things in the fridge too. with or without (refried) beans.
Sunday is waffle day ( almost always) and I'll have my homemade rhubarb simple syrup on mine.
Also make my own rhubarb, strawberry rhubarb, grape jam so there's one or two more days a week with a tiny bit of sugar on the toast on the morning plate. Just a taste. Even oatmeal we'll put dehydrated blueberries or something in.
But no sugar in coffee or tea.

Fry some onion, add chorizo.
Half way of your desired texture, add diced tomatoes and some hot pepper...
I have to tell you, it's better with a scrambled egg... but anyway, tacos of that chorizo are a piece of heaven.

I like a half chicken breast with some white sauce or gravy and some steamed baby carrots. I don't really like toast for breakfast without something else but my dad ate it for almost 40 years. Microwave ersatz grilled cheese is pretty quick, toast with some mustard, a sprinkle of garlic powder and melt some cheese on it in the microwave.

I went for a while with yogurt and whole wheat bread with peanut butter and coffee. Got to a point that I wanted to try some other things. I'll do eggs a couple times a week, with toast and coffee. But that mug in the morning's all the coffee I drink, loosens up my sinuses, and perks me up a bit.

95% of the suggestions here contain sugar. Bread has sugar, fruit has sugar, peanutbutter has sugar. Even plain yogurt has 10grams of sugar.

If you can eat rice, can you eat potatoes as well? Potatoes opens up a bunch of options like hash browns and home fries, baked potato, etc. If it's only rice, California rolls would be on my list. Does it need to be hot? Chicken fried rice. People eat cereal at all hours of the day. Why not California rolls and/or fried rice for breakfast. You're at home, no one's judging you.

Nice! My friend and I didn't make it out of Bangkok on our trip, but I hope to go back some day and travel up north! I have a jar of pepper vinegar that I made up to go with the congee (and other things it works well on). To Thai's, I'm still a wimp when it comes to spicyness but I'm getting there!
Post lots of pictures of Northern Thailand when you can!

Why are we eliminating sugar? Is it for medical reasons, losing weight, diabetes?

Each of those give different answers as the amount of sugar in Peanut butter is minimal and won't hurt for diabetes and possibly for medical reasons but PB is not good for losing weight. Bread, potatoes, rice, and most cereals have lots and lots of simple carbs which are quickly converted to sugar in your GI tract and can be as bad or worse than eating fruit or things with a lot of added sugar. These are not good for diabetics but can work for losing weight. Steel cut oats are a better option in this case.

Remember my weight loss story? It also eliminated pre-diabetes.

Avoid added sugar at all costs. There's plenty in fruit.
Avoid carbs too. Fruit is great. Add plain greek yoghurt.
Other than fruit:
1. Soup
2. Stir fry with veggies.
3. Bacon is just fine.
4. Left over Chili

My favorite breakfast:
Onion-Mushroom-Spinach Omelet, topped with Salsa.

stir fried veggies, with cheese. Last night's left over ribs, orzo. Low country grits with bacon and shrimp. If out, ask for a veggies omelet, no eggs, hash browns.

I don't eat eggs unless I know the chicken's first and last name, and don't like sweet, so soup, grilled cheese sandwich. Side of ham, grits and sliced tomatoes.

Yes, check the label. Depending on how the peanuts were processed, some of the carbs may have been converted to sugars even if no added sugar is listed in the ingredients. I have used a few different brands of "peanuts, salt" and nothing else listed natural peanut butter, all have listed as containing 1 g of sugars per serving just like the label for the Adams brand mentioned by Racer X.

As I posted above, that is not necessarily the case. Check your 'natural' peanut butter label, almost all list about 1 gram of sugars per serving even though no sugar was added during processing. Those sugars are from the roasting process, some of the carbohydrates do get converted to sugars. I don't know of any peanut butter made from raw peanuts, or boiled peanuts, though for boiled peanuts less conversion to sugar occurs.
