Apple shares are doing something very unusual

A falling apple was said to inspire Isaac Newton to articulate the law of gravity. More recently, stagnant shares of Apple could have inspired his first law of motion: "Every body perseveres in its state of rest ... unless it is compelled to change that state by forces impressed thereon."

In the past few weeks, the tech giant has been glued to the $120 level. The stock has closed less than 1 percent away from $120 in each of the past 11 sessions. It has closed less than 0.2 percent away from $120 in each of the past six sessions. And in two of those sessions, it closed at $120 exactly.

That's a pretty horrible edit of the first law of motion.

Yeah, I wondered if a bunch of programmatic buying is in place.

Earnings are next week, anything can happen in either direction.

I sold the last of my AAPL last week at 118.875 or so. Slowing sales of iPhone and Mac hardware do not bode well for the future.

No longer a growth stock; now a value stock. We're unlikely to see the explosive growth of the last couple of decades (stating the obvious), but it will probably do (much) better than investing in annuities.

Yeah, AAPL has only increased 35% in the last 9 months. No growth at all.

Of course, you could always have invested in "real" growth stocks over the same period:

GOOG 16%
AMZN 17%
FB 10%

For us long-term investors, your argument is anything but compelling.

Since hitting a high of 134.46 on April 28, 2015, Aapl is down about 10%. I'd hardly call that growth.

Oh, and GOOG? In the same period (I actually picked April 24, 2015, which was higher for GOOG than the 28), GOOG has gone from 569.58 to 832.27 (most recent quote) recording a modest gain of 46% in less than 2 years.

You know, I think that I'd rather be in GOOG for that period.
(truth in advertising; I've been long in Aapl; but kind of wish I hadn't dumped my GOOG!)

Actually, I agree with you! And in that spirit, I wouldn't be concerned that AAPL is currently 8% below its ATH.
