Found nice iPod touch. Now what?

Went to a polo game that was on the beach and stumbled upon a fairly new iPod touch with a juvenile type silicone sleeve (but no screen protection, not even a film one) on it. Everyone was packing up or had left, and there's no beach staff in winter, plus we had to get home, so we took it, called police to give our contact info if the owner calls, and I put a "found" ad on Craigslist telling the owner that they can describe the sleeve if it's theirs. It is locked with a passcode, and nearly dead. I live an hour from there. I asked about 20 people if they lost anything as I was leaving. There's no engraving on it.

Can anything be done to find the owner, other than what I've done? Morally, how much time should pass before I wipe and keep it?

You could plug it in to charge and connect it to your wifi and see if "find my iPhone" message pops up.

If you don't have the password pretty sure it's impossible to wipe.

Keep it for a week. If you don't hear from the owner, put it in recovery mode and it's yours.

Plugging it in will allow it to access my wifi even without unlocking the iPod? I'll try that. Thanks. I know I would call the police if I lost such a thing, so hopefully the owner will, too...

If you end up with it (and no offense, I hope the owner gets it back), you can definitely wipe it without a password. I do that to ipads everyday after students lock them up.

I hope they get it back, too. I'm just glad it didn't get destroyed.

I have it charging and don't see a way to get it on my wifi...

I didn't know you could wipe it and get past the Passcode.

If this is locked with a passcode, I doubt you can connect to WiFi.

Factory restore it and see if it comes up as icloud locked. If it is, hand it over to police in a week. If not, enjoy your new iPod.

You have to get past the passcode to find out if Find My iPod is turned on.

No you dont. Put the iPad into DFU mode. Connect it to a Mac and it will prompt to restore the iPod. Once the restore is done it will either let you go through all the setup screens or it will prompt you to enter the password for the AppleID associated with the iPod. Unfortunately it doesn't give you the full email address.

Unfortunately it doesn't give you the full email address.

if it did, you could email the owner. Apple should come up with a way to be able to send messages to the owner of these devices when they are locked. For example, connect the device to any wifi network and let the "finder" send a short email to the owner that they found the device and provide contact info.

Since I don't believe I can get it online, I was thinking that Apple should have a screen where you can input A serial number and they will send the owner and email that it was found....

I really think the person should call police since it was lost in a public place. I hope they do.

Left on a public beach? Dad response: "Kid, I hope you enjoyed it while it lasted. Be sure to ask for a new one when birthday or Christmas comes around, or buy it yourself. Until then, enjoy the Disney Channel."

Yep face down with no screen protector. Surprised it's functional. But it's a 6th gen so not too shabby! I have a 2nd gen so this kid is doing a little better than me!

I don't know much about the iPod Touch, but can you ask Siri who it belongs to?

It can't go online for Siri to work if I can't unlock it... as far as I know?

Would it connect to an open network?

Tried that, made my network completely open with no password. I don't think my iPad goes onto a network when it's locked either.

No response to my CL ad or any contact from the police so far...

Would it connect to an open network?

An iOS device will not pair with an unknown wireless network -- even an open network -- until directed to do so from within the Settings app.

It is what it is.
