Any T2 diabetics have experience with Invokana or other SGLT-2 drug?

It recycles sugar through the urine.

Recycles via urine, eh? Dennis, that needs some 'splainin'.

The side effects mentioned in the ads don't sound like fun.

I would love to have a kidney specialist really explains how it works. The explanation in the commercial sounds like corrupted reality.

Yay, my A1C is down, and my sourdough bread is extra tangy.

Normally, the kidneys prevent sugar from appearing in the urine (unless there is so much they can't cope with it, example: Blood glucose over 300). Meds like Invokana partially block this mechanism, so that sugar that normally would be reabsorbed into the bloodstream is now lost in the urine.

Most people I know who take this type of med tolerate it very well. Some have had increased urinary tract infections or yeast infections, but I do not know anyone who has had a severe reaction to it. It has the advantage of weight loss, which can further help the control over diabetes.

Speaking of weight loss, after losing 70 pounds on the previously mentioned salad diet with Mavis' special dressing, I no longer have diabetes.

I don't know if significant weight loss will work for everyone, but I figure it is worth mentioning.

YMMV!

Seems like the added glucose load in the bladder might cause all kinds of interesting bacteria to thrive… guess they know what they're doing in the Pharma industry, however.

I was on it for a while. Terrible experience. After loosing weight all last year they put me on Invokana and I had such a craving for sweets and liquids it was ridiculous. At times I would drink close to a gallon in a half hour. Mixed cravings for water, coffee, milk, chocolate milk (and I don't like chocolate), Gatorade. I ended up gaining about 15 pounds in 1-1.5 months. Put me back on the other medicine and cravings are gone and weight is dropping again.

I haven't been on it but I remember what it was like BEFORE I was diagnosed, and all I can say is never EVER be more than 45 mins from a bathroom... And instead of 8 cups of water a day get used to 8 gallons...

Never had UTIs or anything like that though.

I have to decide in two months. I'm leaning against it now. It's a new medicine that apparently messes with your kidneys. I don't like the sound of that.

Thanks. I thought I had taken a fairly rigorous biology course but in reading through several more and more complex descriptions, I realized my course had skimmed over the complexity of "Processes of Glomerular Filtration, Tubular Reabsorption and Tubular Secretion."
