Dropbox killed all of those pics that I've posted here over the years

I hate you dropbox

I loved sharing those pics, but I also did it for me so I could come back and see the pics grouped the way I LIKED it and perhaps revisit the conversations we had.

no more...

And now there is no way to create links from pics in such a way that they can been embedded here

Yep, they made the product better didn't they.

I used to use Dropbox here as well. I guess I need a new solution now.

I used Comcast for over 10 years, then a year or two ago they shuttered their service. I haven't found an easy replacement.

I setup apache on my home iMac to host the pics I post. Then I registered a domain to make it easy for me to remember. Last installed a program to keep my home IP tied to my domain name. I wouldn't want to host large files this way but it's a good replacement for the small pics I post here.

Photobucket will let you generate a link to embed a photo.

You could also use Google drive. It will also let you generate a public or private link, if you want to post a link to a whole folder of pics.

I use photobucket. Lots of ads unless you pay for a subscription, but it does work well.

Another photobucket and googldrive user.

I only see their (photobucket) printshop menu at the top of the page, but I use adblock so maybe it is working well there.
I haven't used googledrive for pics since 2013 but still have some pics there . I can't use their interface on a migraine headache day. Huh ?

That's just the thing I'm afraid will happen to me, so they're on my own site. At least they'll stay up until I lose interest in my site, and possibly even after I croak.

I use Flickr (why don't they put the 'e' in? just one more character!). The interface is confusing for linking pictures, so I struggle to remember it between times, but it does work here. I also share photo folders on Dropbox with my daughter, but I never put the original folders on either Flickr or Dropbox; just copies.

Does Google Photos allow easy linkng?

I received at least two e-mails from Dropbox in the recent past telling me that my Public folder was scheduled to go private soon. Maybe this is what happened to you?

Now it generates links like this: [www.dropbox.com]

I never got a notice - or if I did, I ignored it as spam, but I saw them here and have been dreading the day. It's here.

I tried google drive and it's the same - I don't see how to get a link that I can embed.

They really @#$%& it up. There is a workaround that works (for now).

Copy the Dropbox link:
https: //www.dropbox.com/s/8pq8eb8e7wb8hn5/IMGP0350.jpg?dl=0
(space added so Forum will display the complete link)

Replace www.dropbox.com with dl.dropbox.com like so:

https: //dl.dropbox.com/s/8pq8eb8e7wb8hn5/IMGP0350.jpg?dl=0
(space added so Forum will display complete link.

Works like it did before:

Test using UW's workaround:

It works!

Won't help Hal, though, unless he wants to go back and replace all the wwws with dls.

Question: Why would 'www' not work?

Also: if Photobucket works for hosting photos, that's good but I hate their site so much I won't even click a link if it takes me there.

Yeah. Sucks.

Workaround could be easy for past photos -- do a find/replace on the file names in the folder.

I had regular warnings this would happen over the last two or three months. As I only use Photobucket for posting photos and videos to forums the problem didn't happen. I am a cheapskate but have paid for the Photobucket ad free and consider it worth the small amount.

It is possible that some broadband accounts include personal web space. My EarthLink account includes eight email accounts. You can have a small personal web site for each account. I have used one of my earthlink accounts to post the occasional pic here. But they are really small, 10MB I think.

Web storage isn't my problem - the ease of use was the best part about DB.

And thanks for the work around Wig, but I can't believe that it'll work for long - that means that DB would be maintaining a server that has no purpose.

Does Google Photos allow easy linkng?

The key for flickr and google photos is "public" photos. Though sharing private photos that you own via flickr is trivial. Go to "all sizes," click the size you wanna share. Right click on that bad boy. Copy image address and that's it.

That could work for renaming the photos in the DropBox (formerly "Publc") folder, but still leaves all the existing URLs posted here at MRF and elsewhere with the previous, now nonfunctional, addresses.

How does one do this with google? I tried google pictures and google drive, but the only kind of link I've been able to create will not embed here.
