I bought a car! (part of the 'how do i leave nyc?' series)
Posted by: mattkime

I bought a new 2017 VW Golf Alltrack.

I wasn't expecting to buy new but

a) Wagons are less expensive and more fuel efficient than SUVs
b) Sufficient for our needs, often competitive space wise with SUVs
c) There's not a lot of used stock
d) The used stock isn't much cheaper than new if you adjust for wear

I went car shopping in nyc and was only able to go on one test drive. (because nyc is crazy) I had fond memories from high school of driving a friend's Golf. The VW dealership let me drive one and it was as a I expected - has a nice kick to it and a good road feel. I'm not a car person but its a hell of a lot more fun to drive than the other cars I tried.

I ended up using zipcar to test drive cars. I spent $10-20/car to rent and didn't have to put up with the headaches of dealing with gatekeeper salesmen. We tried a Honda CR-V which is very spacious but I wasn't crazy about the drive feel. It was also a couple of years older so it wasn't an entirely fair comparison. I tried a Subaru Impreza 5-door. It was nice but on balance the Golf seemed nicer and a better deal. Zipcar-ed a VW Golf for my wife and it brought a smile to her face. It was settled.

Subaru would have been our next choice (not sure which model) but I suspect the popularity of these vehicles has sucked any discounts out of the market for new or used vehicles.

I found a dealership selling the VW Golf Alltrack for about the same price most are selling the Golf Sportwagen ($21.5). I'm not sure what it is, but multiple dealerships in DC had similar prices on the Alltrack. The choice was easy.

Not a very good pic, but its a car so it doesn't matter too much.

Looks nice. Leatherette or cloth seats?

Very nice car. I was given one as a loaner from the vw dealer. I really, really liked it. I've owned two golfs, both were great little cars. Jealous....

Leatherette and heated seats. That was my main interest in the Alltrack. The different drive modes will likely be fun but not something I would have paid a premium.

CarPlay is _awesome_ although I wish Waze was supported.

...aaand the 3 year warranty covers my main concern - reliability. People seem to have either very good or bad things to say in this regard.

You're leaving NYC for Wisconsin.

Why'd you check prices in DC?

Be sure to keep all your paperwork at hand for when you register your car in Wisconsin.

What is the difference between NY and Wisconsin when it comes to sales tax applied to cars?...

I was checking used car prices when I found this

$0. You pay tax based on where the vehicle is registered, not where you purchased it.

I understand the concept, hence the reason for the question, NY hates to give up any potential sales tax, if you purchased it NYC, did you already register it in Wisconsin?...

I might be misunderstanding but all i had to say was "i want to register the car in wisconsin" and everything went smoothly.

Very slick looking car. Enjoy it.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I just looked at the VW site on this vehicle. No kidding...when I saw the picture of the cargo space, I started salivating.

Enjoy your new car!

A station wagon is a great choice. More usuable space than an SUV and should drive better.
Looks like you got a good deal, too. Enjoy!!!

Another "register in Wisconsin" factor is that you have to figure in the price of jumper cables...

We almost bought a Subaru Legacy a few years ago. The test drive was incredibly boring. My wife was excited to buy it. Then she test drove it. She did not like it at all after that.

A coworker likes to research restaurants when we travel. Price isn't really a factor. He says "you have to eat, so you might as well eat well."

When it comes to driving, I feel the same. A car should put a smile on your face. You should want to drive it. A car isn't a utility to get you from point a to point b any more than music's purpose is just to vibrate your eardrums.

This is exactly why I love my G37. The awful truth, though, is even though it is VERY fun to drive, it does not offer much in the way of utility. The trunk on this thing is approximately equal in capacity to about three thimbles.

When I bought this, I was still married and had no reason to believe we'd need a second vehicle with extended cargo capacity.

I had no wife for my first three wagons, and kids came after my 5th. I'm guessing it's a lifestyle thing.

Is your G37 stock? I wonder if my wagon could take you ;)

Yes, stock - it has plenty of go just as it came from the factory.

It's actually pretty amazing I've only received one ticket in it in the four years I've owned it.

Awesome. Stock v stock, you'd beat me. Some minor work would get me 485.

We rented a sports car for our trip. If we had flown into LAX, there was an option for a Boxter or Corvette I was going to try. I've driven neither.

Tough choice! I think I would have gone with the 'vette, though.

Same category, so you get what you get, but I would have preferred the vette as well.

yep, unfortunately that plant has a history of labor troubles.

the OP should plan on either buying VW's extended warranty or selling/trading it when the standard warranty expires.
