Venezuela seizes our General ! Motors, that is...

General Motors said Wednesday it has been forced to stop operating in Venezuela after one of its plants was illegally seized by local authorities.

The seizure, in the country's industrial hub of Valencia, comes amid a deepening economic and political crisis that has sparked weeks of deadly street protests.

General Motors Venezolana, GM's local subsidiary, did not provide any details about the seizure, other than to say the facility "was unexpectedly taken by authorities, preventing normal operations." It said other assets, "such as vehicles," had also been stripped from the site.

Socialist governments....

FWIW... Venezuela is a dictatorship. A socialist government is a symbiotic organization that cares for its population while maintaining the economy for the good of the population. A dictatorship is a parasitic organization that only exists to take wealth from the country while maintaining the trappings of benefits for the population.

jobs are irrelevant... the situation is FAR past any sort of concept of employment. The people are in survival mode right now. Hyperinflation has stripped value from the economy. Have an actual job ? You get 'paid' almost daily. And then immediately convert your pay to supplies that you need.

agree smiley But this is more than agreeing. It's about like gravity. No use to agree, just don't jump from too high.

You're probably right. What about the cars they have "liberated"? To me this is close to an act of war. As Tom Clancy wrote in his novels, war is "armed robbery writ large"...

A dictatorship being the result of Bolivarian leftist socialism. Mostly propped up corruptly with oil revenue, now pretty much unable to support a country dependent on oil revenue.
Except Maduro was elected President by voters not by himself or a coup.
As was Chavez.

Kinda depends on how one defines Dictator.

By very strict definition or by the end of the day.

Well that definition goes a long way to explain why so many people seem to think socialism would be a good thing to have. Unfortunately it has never worked in the real world, probably because the real world is filled with people struggling to survive and get ahead. And not everyone struggles as hard or has a need to get that far ahead of others, in fact some have no ambition at all.

Or, in the real world someone with real ambition figures out that power is an easy way to exploit people. This is why socialism and libertarianism don't work, both are great in concept but require all people to have a similar level of commitment and ambition. That doesn't happen in reality.

I'm glad that someone pointed out the thing that makes libertarianism unworkable: human nature.

Soo... this thread doesn't get bumped to the other side, even though it's fairly political, yet another thread a few months ago got almost immediately bumped to the other side even though that had much less politics in it. I don't get it.
