A bit of bragging

My K9 and I did our final test to become operational in wilderness search and rescue today. A 160 acre area with two subjects. Pretty darn toasty, we usually do these tests in fall and winter. My K9 Ena was awesome. I tried multiple times to screw up land navigation. No GPS allowed. Topo map, compass, and pace beads only. At one point I had followed a drainage up to where it petered out and realized the terrain did not look like it should. Total and utter panic. As in I quit panic! I shoved it all down, tuned everyone out (had two evaluators and the first subject found walking with me). Pulled my butt out of the fire. The worse and best moment of the task. Anyway, we passed!! Now Ena can finally come with me to searches and work. I'm very tired and happy. Was up at 3:30am, drove 3 hours to test site, was in the field for 5 hours, then the drive home. Glad I'm retired and can nap at will tomorrow!

Congratulations!!!
But why no GPS allowed? we should use all the tools we have these days to find and rescue those that need help. What else is banned? do they allow flashlights? Walkie-talkies?

On a test it is not allowed as we could be searching in an area where the signal is weak, or something could happen to the device itself. We also need to be able to move fast, not have our faces in a GPS. On a search we certainly can use a GPS.

Very cool.

I REALLY like that there are people and dogs who will find me if I manage to mess up badly in the wilderness.

You're wearing a uniform; are you part of the Park Service, or another State or Federal agency?

My team, K9 Alert, is one of 7 dog teams in the state of Virginia. We're all volunteer, 501C3 orgs, that have memorandums of understanding with the Va Dept of Emergency Management (VDEM). Standards for the teams, individuals, and K9s are set by VDEM and reps from the K9 teams. We respond to requests for assistance from law enforcement only. We do not respond to requests from family. Nor do we charge anyone. The uniforms helps law enforcement identify who should actually be at a search and can help assure the public that we are out in an official and benign capacity.
