The explanation is rather simple. Instead of going directly from USB-C to HDMI, the adapter uses Display Port Alt Mode to take the signal from source, and then converts that DisplayPort signal to HDMI 2.0 compliant output.

It's not a hack, it's the obvious way to do it. They just updated a DisplayPort / Thundercrap dongle that converts DisplayPort to HDMI 2.0 to be compatible with the DisplayPort over USB-C (USB 3.1 Gen2) protocol.

'USBC to display port to HDMI' instead of

'USBC to HDMI'

In my opinion, hack it is! (Which is a compliment).

Have you connected your new laptop to a DisplayPort monitor with a USBC to DisplayPort cable or is it DisplayPort over USB C to USB C?

Stop it - you guys are making my head hurt!

But seriously this highlights a core problem of going to one connector transporting multiple protocols. And they called Bluray a bag of hurt??!

Not quite sure what you are asking, but I've connected to an external monitor using a DisplayPort cable. I went USBC to miniDisplayPort adapter.
