My cycle computer broke today. Suggestions for a new one?

I think the LBS may have tweaked a cable when they were replacing some derailleur cables. That aside, today one of the plastic clips broke that holds one of the sensors. It's 19 years old, so it's not worth trying to find new parts for.

All I use it for is a timer and speed. I've thought about getting an app for my phone, but am not finding any handlebar mounts I like. I've found a few sites giving reviews, but they all seem to include mounts that are:
1. Not available in the US
2. iPhone only (Why?! Android phones far outsell iPhones.... argh.)
3. Require a special case. I already have a case I like, as does my wife. A special case would mean replacing my car mount and my wife's case for no other reason than being able to connect to a special mount on my bike.

But maybe I'm just better off with a basic computer. I haven't looked into these for 20 years. Any suggestions on what to look for now?

TIA

Can the clip be fixed or replaced with zip ties?

Perhaps you need to ask yourself why you need a bike computer. Back when I was racing, that kind of information was useful. Now that I don't compete any more the information is irrelevant. I use Strava on my phone and just stick it in my back pocket. There's no need to access that info while I'm riding. I am more able to focus without a display in my face.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

For myself, I like to know speed, cadence, and distance while I'm riding.

Total for the year is an incentive, but I suppose I could get that from an app. Same for routes covered.

I've got the low end Garmin (25?) on my road bike, and a cheapo CatEye on the trail bike which I only ride a few times a year.

I've used many types over the years. My current favorite is my Apple watch. As with davester, after logging well over 250,000 miles on the road during my serious riding years, I no longer need the constant feedback. The need for speed use to be everything. Not so much now.

I want to know my speed at least. One local park has a 15mph speedlimit. Occasionally a cop will hide behind some trees and clock people.

Another is so I have a better idea just how fast I'm going downhill. There's certain speeds I'm more comfortable at. And since I don't wear a watch, a basic timer helps me know how long I'm taking.

I already did that for the bracket that holds the computer on. Even still, the speed sensor doesn't seem to work anymore.

That's probably overkill for what I'm looking for. How well does the GPS aspect work? One area I like to know my speed through is between a lot of tall buildings.

hm, yeah, looks like you can get something cheap from nashbar.com for as little as $20.

The GPS can take a few moments to lock in when started. Depending upon your circumstances you mgiht be able to turn it on while you're inside and get gps sync.

as far as riding between tall buildings while on a ride, zero problems. tested through manhattan.

2. iPhone only (Why?! Android phones far outsell iPhones.... argh.)

You have to ask? Seriously?

I guess so. Are iPhone users more likely to blow money on many of the same item? In the US, Android is in the lead and has been for years. Globally, Android is far in the lead: [www.theverge.com]

Of the 432 million smartphones sold in the last quarter, 352 million ran Android (81.7 percent) and 77 million ran iOS (17.9 percent)

So why develop bicycle mounts that only work for 18% of devices? If they made universal mounts, they could hit close to 100%.

I guess my point is that accessory makers presumably know their markets. If I had to guess, I'd say that iPhone owners as a group are far more likely to spend on accessories, apps, and add-ons than Android owners.
